Toledo Walleye News Release
The Storm's 8-1-1 record gives the team the most points (17) in the league standings, as well as the highest current win percentage in the league (.850).
Toledo's 8-1-1 start is the best opening ten games for the organization since the 1993-94 Storm, which went 9-1-0 in their first ten. That team went 13-2-0 in their first fifteen games of the season and went on to win the organization's second consecutive Riley Cup championship.
With the Storm's win last Friday over the Johnstown Chiefs, the team has now won six games in a row at home this season (6-0-0). The franchise record for wins at home is eighteen, which ran over a span from the latter stages of the 1992-93 season through the early stages of the 1993-94 season (02/14/93 - 11/12/93).
In Friday night's game, the Storm scored the game's first three goals. That marks the fifth time this season that the Storm has scored the first three goals in a game. Toledo won each of those games. (10/18 v. Johnstown: scored first 3 goals; won 4-2); (10/19 v. Dayton: scored first 3 goals, won 4-1); (10/20 v. Lexington: scored only 3 goals, won 3-0); (10/25 v. Wheeling: scored first four goals, won 4-3). [NOTE: In the 7-4 win over Wheeling on Sunday, 11/02, the Storm scored the game's first two goals.].
Toledo scored the game's first goal in both games last week. The Storm is currently 8-0-0 when scoring first.
In Friday's 5-2 win over Johnstown, five different players scored for the Storm. In six of the nine games where the Storm has scored three or more goals, the Toledo goals have been tallied by different players within those games, i.e. in only 3 games all season has one player scored more than one goal within a single game. [NOTE: In the 7-4 win over Wheeling on Sunday, 11/02, the Storm's seven goals were scored by six different players.]
Through the first ten games of the season, thirteen different players have scored at least one goal for the Storm.
Dale Junkin scored the game's first goal on Friday night. That was Junkin's first goal of the season for the Storm. He also picked up an assist. Junkin also had two assists in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Wheeling Nailers. Junkin now has three multi-point performances for the Storm. (He also had two assists in the 3-2 win over Cincinnati on October 26.)
Grady Moore scored the game winning goal for Toledo in Friday night's 5-2 win over Johnstown. That was Moore's second game winning goal of the season. Moore also picked up three assists in Friday night's game, making him the first Storm player to have a four point game in this season. [NOTE: In Saturday's 7-4 win over Wheeling, Nick Parillo had a four point night: 1g-3a=4pts.] This was Moore's first four point performance of his pro career, and his second multi-point performance of the season. (He picked up two assists in the 3-2 win over Cincinnati on October 26.)
Grady Moore had six shots on goal on Friday night and four more in Saturday' s 7-4 win over Wheeling. Moore has now collected 42 shots on goal this season, which leads all rookies in that category.
Three of the five goals that the Storm scored in Friday night's 5-2 win were scored while Toledo was on the power play. That was the second time this season that the Storm has scored as many as three power play goals in a single game. (The other was the 3-2 win over Cincinnati at the Toledo Sports Arena on Saturday, October 26).
After going three for ten on the power play at the Toledo Sports Arena against the Johnstown Chiefs on Friday night, the Storm has now scored 11 power play goals in 43 chances at home this season-a 25.6% scoring ratio at home, which ranks the Storm 8th in that category.
Alexandre Jacques scored a power play goal for the Storm on Friday night. That was Jacques second power play goal of the season, which ties him for the team lead in that category with Nick Parillo (who also scored a power play goal on Friday night), Grady Moore and Wes Mason. Last season, Jacques had seven power play goals for the Storm (which placed him third for the team in that category-Richard Keyes had 14 and Kevin Kerr had nine).
Jeff Mitchell scored a power play empty-net goal for the Storm last Friday night. That was the first empty net goal of the season for the Storm.
Prior to Friday night's game, Wes Mason was re-called by the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. Mason is the second player, who started the season with the Storm, to be re-called to the AHL. The other was Erik Anderson, who was also re-called by the Admirals.
Prior to Friday night's game, the Detroit Red Wings re-assigned defenseman, Paul Ballantyne, to the Storm from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Ballantyne was the first player this year, who started the season with an AHL club, to be re-assigned to the Storm. Ballantyne was re-called by the Griffins after the Storm's game Saturday night in Wheeling.
In Saturday's 7-4 win over Wheeling, Alexandre Jacques scored the game's first goal. That was Jacques second "first-goal" of the season. He is tied for the team lead in that category with Erik Anderson, who is currently on re-call to the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. Last season, Jacques had two first goals in 71 games.
Alexandre Jacques became the third Storm player to score two goals in a game on Saturday night-the others are Erik Anderson (10/19 v. Dayton); and Wes Mason (10/26 v. Cincinnati). Last season, Jacques scored two goals in three separate games.
Darryl Bootland scored his first goal as a professional against the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night. Bootland also picked up an assist in that game, making it the first multi-point performance of his pro career, too.
Mike Bayrack scored his fourth goal of the season at the 54 second mark of the second period on Saturday night. Bayrack also picked up two assists in that game, marking his first multi-point performance of the season for the Storm.
Nick Parillo scored the game winning goal for the Storm on Saturday night. That was Parillo's second game winner of the season, tying him for the team lead in that category with Erik Anderson and Grady Moore. Parillo also picked up three assists in the game, thus becoming the second Storm player to have a four point performance on the season. Parillo also had a multi-point game on Friday night (1g-2a=3pts). He now has four multi-point performances with the Storm this season.
Nick Parillo currently has fourteen points for the Storm (6g-8a=14pts), which places him second in the rookie scoring race.
Joe Guenther, who signed with the Storm prior to Friday night's game against the Johnstown Chiefs, picked up three assists on Saturday night in only his second game with the team. That was Guenther's first multi-point performance as a pro.
Six different players had multi-point performances for the Storm against the Nailers on Saturday night: Nick Parillo (1g-3a=4pts); Alex Jacques (2g-1a=3pts); Mike Bayrack (1g-2a=3pts); Joe Guenther (0g-3a=3pts); Darryl Bootland (1g-1a=2pts); and Dale Junkin (0g-2a=2pts). That is the season high for multi-point performances in one game for the Storm.
Nathan Lutz scored his first goal as a professional on Saturday night in Wheeling. It came while the Storm was on the power play at 17:59 of the second period of play to make the score 6-4.
The Storm went one for five on the power play in Wheeling on Saturday. That was only the second road power play goal of the season for the Storm (in twenty-seven tries). The Storm has a 7.4% scoring ration on the road with the man advantage, which ranks the team twenty-fifth in that category.
The seven goals scored by the Storm on Saturday night is a season high for the Storm. Toledo averages 3.80 goals for per game, which places the team fifth overall in the league in that category.
The Storm had fifty shots on the Wheeling goal on Saturday night. That is a season high for the Storm. Toledo averages 37.20 shots on goal per game, which places the Storm second in the league in that category.
The twenty shots that the Storm put on Wheeling's net in the first period of Saturday night's game was a season high for the Storm.
The Storm changed goaltenders at the 8:02 mark of the second period in Saturday night's game against Wheeling. Doug Teskey started the game and made six stops on ten shots. Martin Fillion played the final 31:58 and stopped all seventeen shots he saw in picking up his first win of the season for the Storm. This marked the second time this season that Fillion has substituted for Teskey in a game. (He came in with 11:31 remaining in the 6-0 loss to Dayton on 10/27 and made all five stops he was called upon to make.) The Storm has now substituted goaltenders in four games this season. (Twice Doug Teskey substituted for Brian Finley, when Finley was removed as a pre-cautionary measure to avoid further injury to his groin.)
The Storm allowed two power play goals against in Saturday's 7-4 win over Wheeling. That is the first time this season that the opponent has scored more than one power play goal against the Storm penalty killing unit in a single game. Overall this season, the Storm has allowed 7 power play goals against in 64 chances, which is a 89.2% kill ratio, which ranks the team fourth overall in the league in that category.
The Storm PK gave up the team's first five-on-three goal against on Saturday night. The team killed off twelve consecutive chances for the opponent with a two-skater disadvantage this season before giving that goal up on Saturday.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nick Parillo (2g-5a=7pts, +5, 1 game winning goal, 1 power play goals) Nick Parillo had another big weekend for the Storm. On Friday night, he scored a power play goal at 5:36 of the third period to re-build a two-goal lead for the Storm against the Johnstown Chiefs (at 4-2). He also assisted on the game winning goal that night-as well as assisting on the first goal of the game. On Saturday, Nick had his first four point performance of the season, scoring an unassisted game winning goal at 9:43 of the second period, when the teams were skating four aside. Nick also assisted on three other goals for the Storm, including the game's first goal. These games marked the third and fourth time this season that Nick has had multi-point games for the Storm.
