November 21, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. -A.J. Vanderbeck tallied with nine minutes left in the third to break a tie, catapulting the Sioux Falls Stampede past the Tri-City Storm, 3-1, Saturday from the Viaero Center on "Star Wars Night".
The Storm played close with the Stampede for the whole game; Tri-City was tied or within one goal until 39 seconds left, when Josh Passolt scored an empty-net goal.
Mattias Goransson scored his sixth goal of the season for the Storm and is third on Tri-City with 14 points.
Tri-City outshot the Herd, 30-25, but Ales Stezka took the win with 29 saves. Matt Greenfield stopped 22 of 24 for the Storm in defeat.
The game started out evenly through the opening 20 minutes; each team took seven shots in the first and neither team had a power-play opportunity.
Parker Tuomie scored for Sioux Falls 16 seconds into the second, shooting a wrister around Matt Greenfield on the rush from the left circle to open the scoring. The league's leading goal scorer notched his 16th of the campaign after taking a pass from center Jack Suter at neutral ice. Joe Rutkowski herded the secondary assist.
The Storm's offense geared up shortly after; despite failing to score on its first power play midway through the second, the momentum shifted, and Goransson took advantage.
Tri-City's tying tally developed with three Storm forwards - Wade Allison, Joe Cipollone and Collin Rutherford - crashing the crease. After the puck was relieved from the blue paint, Goransson wristed the shot from the left faceoff dot over Lekkas, placing him into a tie for second on the Storm with six tallies.
Allison and Cipollone earned the assists. The Storm's Western Michigan commit, Allison, has points in consecutive games (1g, 1a) and four points this season.
Cipollone picked up his first assist of the season and has three points in nine games since coming from the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL in October.
With the game tied at one, Tri-City continued to lead in the shots; holding a 21-15 advantage into the third.
Vanderbeck's fourth of the season at the 9:15 of the final frame, assisted by Eric MacAdams, gave the Herd the lead for the rest of the game. Stezka made nine stops in the third, while Greenfield turned aside eight.
The Storm wraps up its three-game homestand Wednesday, November 25, at 7:05 p.m. against the rival Lincoln Stars on "Hunger Games Night", sponsored by the Nebraska Lottery. The first 1,000 visitors in the door will receive a free Mockingjay pin.
Groups of 10+ can get discounted group tickets for as low as $11! For more information contact the Storm Box Office at 308-338-8144.
