Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Kearney, NE - AJ Vanderbeck's goal at 9:15 of the third period proved to be the game winner as the Sioux Falls Stampede topped the Tri-City Storm 3-1 Saturday night at the Viaero Center. The win gave the Stampede a weekend split in their weekend series and two of three straight games against the Storm. Parker Tuomie tallied his league leading 16th goal of the season in the second period and Ales Stezka earned his fifth win of the season in goal with 29 saves. The win was the third in the Herd's last four games and improved their record to 10-8-0 overall and into sole possession of third place in the West.
After a scoreless first period, the Stampede wasted little time getting on the board in the second as Parker Tuomie extended his goal scoring streak to six games with a goal just 16 seconds in. Jack Suter took the puck at center ice and sent it down the left wing boards for Tuomie who beat the defense and then faked out Storm goaltender Matthew Greenfield, lifting the puck over his right pad and into the net to give Sioux Falls a 1-0 edge. Tuomie now has a league leading 25 points in just 18 games played.
The Stampede lead would hold until the 13:58 mark when Tri-City drew even on a goal from defenseman Mattias Goransson. The Herd were trying to clear the puck out of the slot when it slipped back to Goransson who blasted a shot that went off the glove of Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka to tie the game 1-1. Both teams exchanged scoring chances late in the period, but Tri-City outshot the Herd 14-8. The teams would end the period still tied 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
The start of the third period was back-and-forth with both teams exchanging quality scoring chances. Sioux Falls would regain their lead at 9:15 of the period on A.J. Vanderbeck's fourth goal of the season. Eric MacAdams made a nice play with the puck in the left circle, going around the Tri-City defense and sending a perfect pass across ice into the right circle for Vanderbeck who quickly wristed the shot past Greenfield to give Sioux Falls a 2-1 edge. The Storm would throw nine shots on goal and tried desperately to tie the game, but Stezka was solid between the pipes and shut down any quality scoring chances for the Storm. The Herd would seal the game with 39 seconds remaining when Josh Passolt took the puck from this own left circle and sent it the length of the ice into the back of an empty Tri-City net to make it 3-1.
Sioux Falls outshot the Storm 10-9 in the third period, but Tri-City outshot Sioux Falls in the game, 30-25. A night after both teams combined for five powerplay goals, each team went 0-for-2 on the advantage.
The Stampede return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Omaha to face the Lancers at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com.
