Toledo Walleye News Release

(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm of the East Coast Hockey League has only been defeated once in regulation in the team's last sixteen games (11-1-4), but seven of those games have ended regulation in a tie, and the Storm has come up on the short end of the overtime/shootout stick in four of those-including tonight, when the Lexington Men O'War defeated Toledo in a shootout, 3-2.

The Storm struck first, at 2:45 of the first, on a nice two-on-one break that featured a saucer from Matt Ellis out of the left circle to the charging Darryl Bootland on the backdoor. Bootland re-directed the puck behind Lexington goaltender, Dan Murphy, for his second goal in as many nights. The Men O'War got a break when Storm goaltender, Mike Minard, charged from the crease for a loose puck in the high slot; and Lexington's Mark Smith won the race for the puck and fired it into the vacant net to tie things at one, 7:31 into the first. The Storm took the lead back, however, with one second remaining in the first period, when Jeff Johnstone snuck a hard-wrap-around through Murphy. Johnstone has now scored a goal in four consecutive games for the Storm.

Lexington tied it up again, at 13:37 of the second period, when Jared Smyth put back a loose puck after a shot from the left point by Ben Storey.

The remaining time in regulation-and the five-minute overtime-featured a goaltender's dual between Murphy and Minard with both goalies ending with 36 stops on the night. That battle continued through the shootout as only three shooters scored in the sixteen attempts, and Kevin Knopp's score in the eighth round gave Lexington the 2-1 advantage in the final frame.
