Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - For the second time in as many days, a third-period push resulted in a 5-2 final score, but this time it was the Tri-City Storm (28-19-1-2, 59 pts.) defeating the Chicago Steel (23-23-1-4, 51 pts.) Sunday as the teams split a weekend set at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

The Steel received goals from Nick Abruzzese and Baker Shore.

Neither team found the back of the net in a first period that saw Chicago's Justin Robbins turn away eight shots and Tri-City's Jake Barczewski make seven saves of his own.

It didn't take long in the second period for the Storm to open the scoring for the second-straight game. Tri-City defenseman Keaton Pehrson beat Robbins with a shot from the goal line that bounced past the glove side.

The Steel evened things up with 3:10 to play in the second with Abruzzese's third goal of the weekend. After Robert Mastrosimone collected a loose puck in the Chicago zone, he and Abruzzese streaked in for a two-on-one and Abruzzese's shot trickled over Barczewski's blocker.

Tri-City began the final frame with a pair of goals in a 12-second span. Storm captain Brian Hawkinson shoveled a forehand shot into an open net after a cross-crease pass from defenseman Hugo Blixt at 2:28. Then Tyler Madden made it a two-goal lead with an unassisted goal after finding a loose puck in front of the net and firing a wrist shot from his knee past an outstretched Robbins at the 2:40 mark.

Blixt added a goal of his own with a far-side wrist shot from the left point that found its way over the glove at 8:19.

The Steel got one back when Shore tipped a Todd Goehring backhand shot through the five-hole of Barczewski with 9:32 to play. With the helper, Goehring collected his first career USHL assist.

But Tri-City regained the three-goal lead less than five minutes later when Koster's power-play shot through traffic found twine with 4:50 to play.

Next up for the Steel is a three-game weekend against first-place Team USA, starting with road games Friday at Saturday nights (6:05 p.m. CT) in Plymouth, Mich., against the U-18 Team, before returning home for a Steel Family Sunday on March 25 against the U-17 Team. Steel games are carried live on Mixlr (free audio) and HockeyTV (iPPV). For more information, visit ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com/broadcast.

Sunday's home game is Chicago's Celebration of Girls Hockey, featuring an appearance by USA women's hockey Olympic gold medalist Kendall Coyne. The Chicagoland native will be on hand to participate in a ceremonial puck drop, autograph session and in-game promotions. Puck drop is set for 3:05 p.m. and fans are invited to join the Steel on the ice for a post-game Skate with the Steel.
