Sioux City Musketeers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - After a long layoff, the Musketeers were back in action on St. Patrick's day to take on the Sioux Falls Stampede. The Stampede put on an offensive show with a 7-2 victory over the Musketeers last Friday and nearly matched that total with a 6-3 win over Sioux City on St. Patrick's Day.
The Musketeers got off to another hot start in the 1st period thanks to the play of Dylan Mills. Mills entered the Musketeers zone on the far right side, and instead of passing it decided to fire a rocket past Mikhail Berdin to put the Musketeers up 1-0 early. Sioux Falls would answer quickly on a goal by Adam Dawe at the 7:36 mark to tie the game up at one. Sioux City controlled most of the play in the 1st period and managed to retake the lead with just over 5 minutes to go in the period. Sampo Ranta collected the puck in the Musketeer defensive zone and made a gorgeous cross-ice board pass to a streaking Micah Miller. Miller blew by his defenders and took a shot that was initially blocked by Berdin, but he did not cover it, and Miller managed to poke it by him to give Sioux City a 2-1 lead. Sioux Falls would answer in a big way with two goals with under a minute to play. Sioux City seemed a bit shell-shocked and would head into the locker room trailing 3-2.
The 2nd period saw the Musketeers get away from their game and Sioux Falls took advantage. Kevin Conley gave Sioux Falls a 4-2 lead on a strange play. Conley fired a shot on net, and it appeared Jurusik covered it up but there was no whistle, and Conley when crashing into Jurusik and the net. To goal would be reviewed but it stood, and Sioux Falls took a two-goal lead. Cameron Burke expanded the lead to three with a hard shot that beat Jurusik over the glove to put Sioux Falls up 5-3. Jurusik would get the hook after the goal and in his place stepped Ben Kraws. Kraws was solid the rest of the period keeping the Stampede off the board. The Musketeers had their chances, throwing 15 shots on net, but were unable to convert and would head into the locker room trailing by three.
The Musketeers battled in the 3rd period and managed to gain some momentum. Sammy Walker, who was just named Mr. Hockey for the state of Minnesota, made an excellent move off a faceoff in Sioux Fall's zone and fed Dylan Mills who slipped it by Berdin for his second goal of the game. The goal would cut the Musketeers' deficit to two, but that would be all the offense they could muster in the period. Sioux Falls would add an empty net goal at the end of the game to secure their 6-3 victory.
The good news for Sioux City is the Chicago Steel managed to take down the Tri-City Storm which means the Musketeers are still in the race for the 6th and final playoff spot. The Musketeers will travel down to Omaha tomorrow to take on the Lancers in a crucial Western Conference tilt. As always head over to Buffalo Wild Wings.
