Sioux City Musketeers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Musketeers made the short trip down to Omaha to take on the Lancers in a Sunday afternoon matchup and managed to skate to a 4-3 shootout victory.
Sioux City came out the gates flying in the 1st period scoring just 50 seconds into the game. After breaking up a play in the defensive zone, Dylan Mills made an excellent breakout pass to Sammy Walker at center ice. Walker then used his elite speed to beat his defender wide before feeding Koepke on the backdoor who buried it to give the Musketeers the early 1-0 lead. The speed of Walker was on display in the 1st period as he managed to set up the Musketeers on some excellent scoring chances throughout the frame. Sioux City continued to play a strong period, not giving the Lancers many chances but couldn't keep them off the board completely. Filip Suchy fooled Ben Kraws on an initial shot and had the net wide open for the wraparound but couldn't convert. It looked like Kraws had covered the puck up but no there was no whistle, and Noah Cates managed to poke it by Kraws to tie the game up at 1. The game evened out from there with both teams getting good powerplay opportunities, but neither could convert, and the 1st period would end deadlocked at 1.
The Musketeers came out strong again in the 2nd period and were rewarded with a powerplay opportunity just under 3 minutes into the period. Micha Miller, who has been the Musketeer's hottest scorer as of late, received the puck near the top of the left circle in the offensive zone and ripped a wrist shot right by Vinny Purpura to give the Musketeers a 2-1 lead. The goal would give Miller his 5th in 5 games, and it came against the league's top penalty kill unit.
Sioux City continued to look strong throughout the period managing to keep the highly skilled Lancers for most of the frame but again couldn't shut them down completely. After a nice offensive zone setup, Filip Suchy fired a shot that beat Kraws high for his 30th goal of the season to tie the game up at 2. Sioux City had an excellent chance to retake the lead on a four-minute powerplay but was unable to beat the Lancer penalty kill a second time. The 2nd period would end with the score tied at two.
The 3rd period was a high flying frame with both teams getting many pucks on net and testing the goaltenders for both teams. The Lancers would strike first in the period of a turnaround shot by Jack Randall with just over 8 minutes to play in the period. The Lancers had an excellent chance to take the lead when Matt Miller was called for a trip with just under 5 minutes to play in the game.
The Musketeers did an excellent job killing off the sixth Lancer powerplay and would take advantage right away. Miller came out of the box right as the Musketeers were going on a two on one break and filled the gap on the right side entering the zone. Bauer Neudecker fed the puck to Cole Koepke who then passed it to Miller waiting at the back door, and he tapped it in to tie the game up at 3. Neither team could find the winner late in the game, and this one would head to OT.
The Lancers had the early advantage in the extra frame throwing a few high danger shots at Kraws, but he stood tall and kept the Lancers off the board. The Musketeers would have a good opportunity of their own on the powerplay but couldn't convert, and this one would head to a shootout.
It took five rounds but Micah Miller would eventually get the goal the Musketeers needed, and Kraws stopped every shooter to give Sioux City a huge 4-3 win in Omaha.
With the win and Tri-City victory nothing much changes for the Musketeers playoff outlook as they are still trailing Storm. The Musketeers will be back in action on the road next weekend in Des Moines and Waterloo before returning home on Sunday March, 25th for the fifth and final game against the Fargo Force.
