Storm Defeat Lancers 3-2 in Shootout

Ralston, NE - The Tri-City Storm defeated rival Omaha 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night at Ralston Arena. Tri-City got goals from Joe Molenaar and Ian Murphy, and Jake Barczewski picked up the win in net. Colby Ambrosio and Zach Jones each scored in the shootout to give Tri-City a 3-2 shootout win. The Storm travel to Lincoln, NE tomorrow to faceoff against the Lincoln Stars at 7:05pm.

Just over five minutes into the game, Tri-City's Joe Molenaar netted his 3rd goal of the season to put the Storm in front. The goal at 5:02 of the 1st period was assisted by Zach Jones and Colton Kalezic. Omaha's Brian Silver tied the game at 1-1 minutes later on a goal assisted by Logan Will. Omaha outshot Tri-City 12-8 in the 1st period and the two team's entered the 2nd period in a 1-1 tie.

Yan Kern netted his 4th goal of the season with under six minutes to play in the 2nd period to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead on home ice. Omaha outshot Tri-City 9-7 in the 2nd period and carried a one goal lead into the 3rd period. The goal was scored on the power play. The Storm would need a 3rd period comeback to avoid dropping consecutive games for the first time this season.

Less than four minutes into the 3rd period, Tri-City's Ian Murphy scored his 3rd goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. The goal was assisted by Elias Rosen and Ruben Rafkin. The Storm outshot Omaha heavily in the 3rd period but couldn't find the go ahead goal. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie, and each team recorded one point in the USHL standings.

For the second consecutive game, Tri-City and Omaha needed extra time to determine a winner. Three on three overtime ended without any goals, and for the first time this season, the Storm headed into a shootout. After neither team found the back of the net in the first round of the shootout, both Tri-City's Colby Ambrosio and Omaha's Ryan Savage scored in the second round. Zac Jones beat Lancers goaltender Vinnie Purpura to score the go ahead goal in the shootout for the Storm. The final Omaha shooter, Jaxon Nelson, was turned away by Jake Barczewski, and Tri-City picked up a road win over rival Omaha in the shootout. The Storm outshot the Lancers 11-2 in the 3rd period, 2-1 in overtime, and 29-24 overall. Storm goaltender Jake Barczewski improved his 2018-2019 record to 3-0 in the win.

The Storm return to action tomorrow night in a road game against the Lincoln Stars. Puck drop at The Ice Box is scheduled for 7:05pm, with the broadcast beginning on Storm Radio at 6:45pm.
