
Storm Chasers to Recognize 12 College-Bound Students

Papillion, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers and the Nebraska State Treasurer's Office proudly unveil the 12 seventh and eighth grade winners of the 10th annual "Why I Want to Go to College" essay contest. The students' accomplishments will be celebrated prior to the Storm Chasers game on May 20th with Tacoma. The final 12 winners were selected by State Treasurer Don Stenberg.
The four first-place winners will each receive a $1,000 contribution to a Nebraska college savings plan; four second-place winners will each receive a $500 contribution to a Nebraska college savings plan; and four third-place winners will each receive a $300 Nebraska college savings plan contribution. As in previous years, three winners were selected from each of Nebraska's three Congressional Districts and three winners were selected from outside the state.
"These 12 young people have made a commitment to better themselves by striving to go to college," said President and General Manager of the Storm Chasers, Martie Cordaro. "To be able to sponsor this essay contest alongside the Nebraska State Treasurer's Office to honor the hard work of these young people is truly something special to be a part of."
"We congratulate the winners and thank all the students who took part in this year's contest and took time to reflect and clearly articulate the reasons why they want to go to college," Treasurer Stenberg said.
A total of 679 essays were received in the 2012 contest. Initial judging was completed by students and faculty in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The 12 winners and their hometowns and schools are as follows:
1st Congressional District

Second - Kathryn Scanlan, Springfield, NE, Platteview Central
Third - Madison Swann, Lincoln, NE, Scott Middle School
2nd Congressional District
First - Kara Ruffcorn, Omaha, NE, Westside Middle School
Second - Shayla Andersen, Omaha, NE, Russell Middle School
Third - Taylor Hogan, Omaha, NE, McMillan Magnet School
3rd Congressional District
First - Matthew Pekarek, Stromsburg, NE, High Plains Community
Second - Molly Lambert, Ewing, NE, Chambers Public School
Third - John Husmann, Kearney, NE, Kearney Catholic High School
Out-of-State
First - Madeline Nicholls, Chandler, AZ, Chandler Preparatory Academy
Second - Lauren Hynes, Lebanon, MO, Lebanon Junior High School
Third - David Gutierrez, Hayward, CA, All Saints Catholic School
The Nebraska State Treasurer's Office is the trustee of the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST), Nebraska's 529 College Savings Plan, which offers four college savings plans for investors not only in Nebraska, but across the United States. First National Bank of Omaha is the program manager.
