Today's Game-- The RedHawks seek to avoid an unlucky seventh straight loss as they play Las Vegas at 11:05 a.m., their second morning start in three days. The 51s are gunning for their eighth straight win.
Last Night-- Las Vegas scored four runs over the first two innings and got solid pitching from their entire staff, sending the RedHawks to a sixth straight loss, 4-1. All four Las Vegas runs came with two outs over the first two innings. Yan Gomes delivered an RBI single in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. In the second, Anthony Gose smashed a two-run triple, and Travis D'Arnaud followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0. The RedHawks were held to just six hits, and scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Fernando Martinez and Justin Ruggiano provided back-to-back doubles. Las Vegas' bullpen pitched the final 5.1 innings, holding the RedHawks to three hits. Robert Coello (2-0) earned the win after tossing three scoreless frames. Making his Triple-A debut, Jarred Cosart took the loss for the RedHawks. Cosart (0-1) pitched a season-high six innings, allowing four runs and 10 hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Dallas Keuchel will try to play stopper when he takes the mound this morning...Keuchel is coming off his fifth career complete game--albeit in a loss--last Friday in Omaha...He threw 112 pitches and got stronger as the game went on, retiring 11 of the last 12 hitters he faced...His 2.18 ERA is fourth-best in the PCL, and his 1.06 WHIP and 9.58 baserunners per nine innings each rank fifth....The lefty has tossed at least six innings in each start and is second in the league with 41.1 IP...Keuchel has already been honored as a PCL Pitcher of the Week (April 5-15) and Astros Triple-A Pitcher of the Month for April...In seven career starts at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Keuchel is 4-1 with a 1.36 ERA...Scott Richmond makes the start for Las Vegas and has been pitching well of late...He is coming off back-to-back quality starts, both resulting in wins...Richmond is averageing nearly a strikeout per inning (34 K/34.2 IP) and has performed well away from hitter-friendly Cashman Field, allowing five runs and 12 hits over 13 innings...The British Columbia native spent is in his fifth year with the Blue Jays and spent the bulk of last season with the 51s (6-9, 7.33)...He played two seasons at Oklahoma State (04-05).
Rough Stretch-- The RedHawks have lost eight of their last nine games and have been outscored 64-38. As a team, they've hit .252 and have a team ERA of 7.14.
Beating The Streak-- The RedHawks also had an early six-game losing streak last season, dropping six straight from April 16-22. The team's last seven-game losing streak occurred August 25-31, 2007.
Going the Distance-- Even though he took the loss in his last start Friday in Omaha, Dallas Keuchel tossed his fifth career complete game and first in Triple-A. It was just the fourth CG in the PCL this season and the first by a RedHawk since September 2, 2010 (Guillermo Moscoso), but the first non-seven-inning complete game since September 4, 2009 (Kris Benson).
Class Is In Session-- Today marks the third 11:05 a.m. start this season for the RedHawks. They've split their two previous field trip games, winning 7-5 in Nashville on April 18 and losing 8-4 Monday in Omaha.
Ruthless Ruggiano-- Over the last nine games, Justin Ruggiano has caught fire, going 14-for-34 (.433) with three home runs and a remarkable 13 RBIs. Twice's he delivered go-ahead clutch hits with two outs in the ninth inning. Ruggiano is on an 11-game hitting streak (.415, 17x41), the longest by a RedHawk this season.
Hessman Heating Up-- Mike Hessman is hitting .400 (10-for-25) over his last eight games. He's had a multi-hit game in four of his last eight starts, and the during his last five games he is 7-for-15 with two home runs.
M&M Men-- Scott Moore and Fernando Martinez have both stood out within the RedHawks lineup. Moore leads the PCL with 14 doubles, ranks second in extra-base hits (19), second in on-base percentage (.446), and fourth in slugging percentage (.638). Martinez leads the RedHawks with five homers and leads the team along with Moore with 25 RBIs. Combined they are hitting .327 with nine homers and 50 RBIs. Last week, Moore was named the Astros Triple-A Offensive Player of the Month, and Martinez was named the Triple-A Defensive Player of the Month.
You Better Think Twice-- The RedHawks have caught 17 of 36 attempted base stealers for a 47.2% caught stealing rate, easily the best in the PCL. (Iowa is next at 40.7%.) Landon Powell ranks first in the league, going 7-for-12, and Carlos Corporan is 10-for-24.
Rough Starts-- After posting a 2.14 ERA through the first 16 games of the season, the starting rotation has faltered a bit lately. Over the last 17 games, the starters have a 7.12 ERA (72 ER/91.0 IP) and have allowed 123 hits in 94.0 innings. Six of those starts have lasted less than five innings.
Against the 51s-- Since these teams are in opposing conferences, this will be the only series between the two clubs in 2012...Last season they split a four-game series at Cashman Field, with three of four contests decided by one run...They also split their last series in Oklahoma City in 2010...The 51s lead the all-time series 38-34 with a 16-16 mark in OKC.
