Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Metairie, LA - Five pitchers combined on a three-hitter as Omaha shut out New Orleans, 1-0, Thursday night to salvage the last of a rain-shortened three-game series at Zephyr Field. The Storm Chasers halted a three-game slide to improve to 15-11 and maintain their hold on first place in the American Conference North Division over Memphis, which travels to Omaha to begin a four-game series on Friday night.
After four scoreless frames, the Storm Chasers broke through in the fifth to produce the game's only run. Anthony Seratelli led off with a single, moved to second base on a Willy Taveras sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a base hit by David Lough, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Everett Teaford made a spot start for Omaha and made the most of it, as he retired all 12 batters he faced before reaching his pitch limit. Louis Coleman took over in the fifth and set down the side in turn before Paul Gran spoiled the visitors bid for perfection with a leadoff double in the sixth. However, he was left stranded at third base with one out after Kevin Mattison popped out and Gorkys Hernandez was called out on strikes.
Brian Flynn made his second Triple-A start for NOLA and lasted into the seventh inning before his second walk of the frame to Lough ended his night and brought Zach Phillips out of the bullpen. The Z's second straight southpaw retired Christian Colon to end the inning and combined with David Aardsma for two more scoreless frames. Flynn allowed six hits and struck out five over his 6 2/3 innings but was saddled with the hard-luck loss.
Coleman allowed one hit and struck out four over three innings to pick up the win and gave way to Blaine Boyer, who yielded a two-out double to Gran and an infield hit to Jordan Brown that pushed Gran to third base. Donnie Joseph was then called on to face the lefty-swinging Mattison and the Omaha left-hander got the job done by striking him out to squash the threat and end his 10-game hitting streak. Michael Mariot worked around a one-out walk and a deep fly ball out in the ninth to preserve the win and earn his fourth save.
The Storm Chasers will send left-hander Will Smith to the mound against Memphis southpaw John Gast, who has not allowed a run, earned or unearned, over 29 2/3 innings to start the season, in Friday's series starter. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
