Sacramento River Cats News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Sonny Gray spun a four-hit complete game Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park, using just 94 pitches to shut down the Fresno Grizzlies, 4-1.
Gray (3-1) was masterful throughout the evening, seemingly getting stronger as the game wore on. He retired 15 of the final 17 batters of the game, finishing with six strikeouts and two walks. He threw 60 of his 94 pitches for strikes while inducing 10 groundball outs. The lone blemish against him came when Brett Pill singled home a run in the fourth inning.
Despite Gray's effort, the game was tied at 1-1 in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on, Shane Peterson hit an opposite field two-run homer to break the tie, and Michael Choice followed with a mammoth solo homer that left the stadium, giving Sacramento a 4-1 lead. The three-run cushion was more than enough for Gray, who won for the third time in five starts this season.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Chris Heston (2-2) came out on the losing end, giving up the eventual game-winning runs on the Peterson homer.
Peterson's home run was his first of the year, while Choice's was his fifth. Michael Taylor finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Connor Crumbliss drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.
The two teams conclude the series Thursday evening, with River Cats lefty Andrew Werner (2-3, 8.78) and Grizzlies right-hander Shane Loux (1-1, 4.61) set to face off, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
The River Cats return home Friday, May 3, for a four-game set against the Las Vegas 51s, with fireworks shows on Friday and Saturday night.
