Almonte Helps Tacoma Down Padres
May 2, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Padres News Release
Denny Almonte's two-run double in the seventh put the Tacoma Rainiers ahead for good in a 4-2 win over the Tucson Padres Wednesday at Cheney Stadium.
Carlos Triunfel put the Rainiers ahead in the second inning by lining a single to center bringing home Carlos Peguero from second base. Tucson first baseman Brandon Allen knotted up the score with a solo home run off the light tower past right-center field in the top of the sixth. Two batters later, Dean Anna hit the Padres second home run of the inning to give Tucson a 2-1 advantage. The Rainiers recaptured the lead in the seventh on Almonte's two-run double and scored once more in the eighth with an RBI infield single from Peguero.
Padres manager Pat Murphy felt Peguero was out at first base on the infield single, which would have ended the inning and stopped the fourth Tacoma run from scoring. Murphy was ejected from the game, Tucson's first ejection of the season.
The Padres had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Bobby LaFromboise sealed the win with his first save of the season. Reliever Jhonny Nunez won his second game for Tacoma, while Tommy Layne suffered his second loss of the year for the Padres. Tucson starter Tim Stauffer went six innings, allowing only one run while striking out a season-high eight batters in the contest.
