May 2, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
LHP Aaron Laffey will join the Albuquerque Isotopes today, Thursday, May 2. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed the 28-year-old southpaw Laffey as a free agent on April 30. RHP Steve Smith was sent to Ogden (Rookie) today. Laffey will wear number 34.
The six-foot hurler began the 2013 season with the Mets, allowing eight runs in 10.0 innings of work over four games (two starts) and was then designated for assignment. The Blue Jays claimed Laffey off waivers. He made one start in Toronto before being designated and opting for free agency on April 29, tossing 2.2 innings and surrendering two runs on two hits and walking five.
Laffey was originally selected in the 16th round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft by the Cleveland Indians. In seven big-league seasons with five teams, Laffey is 25-29 with a 4.45 ERA (544 ER/487.0 IP). The Maryland native's best Minor League season came in 2007 when he was named a Baseball America Triple-A All-Star. He also earned two Pitcher of the Week awards, one in the Double-A Eastern League and one in the Triple-A International League. Laffey went 13-4 with a 2.88 ERA (42 ER/131.1 IP) that season.
Smith joined the Isotopes on April 6 and has appeared in six games from the bullpen this season. The former Lobo posted a 1-0 record with a 2.84 ERA (4ER/12.2IP), six strikeouts and five walks. The Michigan native made his Triple-A debut on April 7 at Isotopes Park tossing a scoreless third of an inning.
The Topes will look to sweep their four-game series against Memphis tonight with a 6:35 p.m. start at Isotopes Park. RHP Sean White (1-2, 3.66) is scheduled to start against Redbirds righty Maikel Cleto (0-1, 14.46). Listen to all of the action as Josh Suchon has the call on 610AM.
