KEARNEY, NE. - The Tri-City Storm has acquired forward Evan Werner and a 7th Round Draft pick in the 2024 USHL Phase II Draft from the Omaha Lancers in exchange for forward Drew Montgomery and a 3rd Round Draft pick in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft.
Evan Werner, 19, of Flower Mound, Texas, has scored three goals and notched four assists in fourteen games played this season with the Omaha Lancers. Werner netted six goals and recorded two assists in sixteen regular season games last season for the Lancers. He was the team's leading scorer during four games in the 2022 Clark Cup Playoffs. Werner scored five goals and recorded one assist during the postseason. Prior to his time with the Lancers last season, he skated in thirty-eight games for the Youngstown Phantoms. Werner scored eight goals and recorded ten assists for eighteen total points with the Phantoms. He was drafted 34th overall in the 3rd Round of the 2019 USHL Phase I Draft by the Lincoln Stars. Werner made his USHL debut on January 25th, 2020, in Lincoln's 4-2 home victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints. He scored his first career goal on December 4th, 2021, in Youngstown's 4-3 overtime road loss to the Green Bay Gamblers. Werner netted a hat trick on April 30th, 2022, in Omaha's 7-4 road loss to the Storm in Game #1 of the 2022 Western Conference Semifinal round of the Clark Cup Playoffs. He previously announced a commitment to play collegiate hockey in the future at Colorado College.
Drew Montgomery, 19, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, netted eight career goals and notched eighteen career assists in ninety-seven regular season games with the Storm. He was selected 102nd overall in the 7th Round of the 2020 USHL Phase II Draft by Tri-City. Montgomery made his USHL debut on November 13th, 2020, in the Storm's 5-1 road loss to the Omaha Lancers. He scored his first career goal on January 29th, 2021, in Tri-City's 6-0 home victory over Omaha. Montgomery scored a career-high six goals, and recorded a career-high nine assists during the Storm's 2021-2022 Anderson Cup Championship season. He previously announced a commitment to play collegiate hockey in the future at Colorado College.
"Drew Montgomery wore the Storm jersey with pride the last two-plus years. He was a competitor, a beloved teammate, and was part of a lot of wins. He will be missed by everyone within the organization, and we wish him the best. Evan Warner is a veteran forward who should provide added speed, skill, and scoring to our lineup. We feel he will add a much-needed boost to our forward group moving forward."- President of Hockey Operations/Head Coach Anthony Noreen
"It is not easy to trade a returning player, let alone one who has been with our club for two years, and who has been a part of a lot our success in Kearney. We felt we needed to make a change, we wish Drew the best in a new environment, and we appreciate his time and contributions to our club. We are excited to acquire forward Evan Werner in this transaction. He is a forward who has been part of a previous championship at the U-15 level, and who has been a productive U-15 and U-16 player in Detroit. Evan had a giant first year of junior hockey in the NAHL as an All-Rookie Team player, and last season in his first year in the USHL, he was an impact forward down the stretch and in the playoffs. We hope that a change in scenery sparks him in this trade, and we see the player who was so dangerous against us last season." - General Manager Jason Koehler
In a separate transaction, forward David Sacco has also been traded to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) in exchange for cash considerations.
