Procious Named Hawks' Captain

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Veteran defenseman Tyler Procious will have a "C" on the front of his jersey when the Waterloo Black Hawks take the ice this weekend; on Thursday, the Hawks announced that Procious has been voted club's 2022/23 captain by his teammates.

Additionally, forward Garrett Schifsky will serve as an assistant captain during all Waterloo games. Ben Robertson will skate as an assistant captain on nights when the Hawks are at home, while Myles Hilman will hold the designation during away games.

Procious joined the Black Hawks during September of 2021 after a trade from the Muskegon Lumberjacks, where he had spent his first year in the league. The now-19-year-old has appeared in more USHL regular season games (97) than any other player on Waterloo's current roster and is on pace to make his 100th appearance on Thanksgiving. In 13 games this year, Procious has one goal and five assists with a +7 plus/minus differential.

"It's definitely a huge honor to be voted captain by my teammates," Procious said. "I want to use this opportunity to bring the younger guys up and help them throughout the year. My first year didn't go great, but I got through it. I had some great captains to help me, so I learned from them and will use that experience."

Schifsky was Waterloo's leading scorer last season with 46 points (28 goals, 18 assists). He is also currently tied for the team's scoring lead this year with 12 points (seven goals, five assists) in 13 contests. That includes at least one goal or assist in six of the last seven games. Schifsky is committed to the University of Michigan.

"I think I lead by example on the ice," Schifsky noted. "I might not be the best vocal leader, but I'm trying to work on that as well, and especially in the locker room, just telling the guys to 'keep going with it...it's a long season' and to just take care of your body and get it right for every single game."

Robertson is currently tied for third in scoring among USHL defensemen with 11 points (all assists). Like Procious, Robertson was acquired via a trade last season, joining the Black Hawks from the Omaha Lancers and recording two goals and 13 assists after the move. He is a Cornell recruit.

"I'm super grateful for my time here in Waterloo," said Robertson. "Getting traded here was a huge, exciting moment of my life and turned my season around last year. I'm just grateful for the opportunity."

Hilman is spending his first USHL season in Waterloo after being the captain for the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The future Nebraska-Omaha Maverick has four goals and one assist during his first 13 games for the Hawks.

"I've done a little bit of this before with a leadership role, and you - kind of - get to know it," explained Hilman. "You know how different guys respond to different types of leadership, and it really transfers over no matter where you go."

Waterloo's newly minted captains lead the team to the ice on Friday and Saturday against the Lincoln Stars at Young Arena. Friday's game begins at 7:05 p.m. with puck drop Saturday scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Seats for both games are available online from tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com. the last seven games. Schifsky is committed to the University of Michigan.
