September 1, 2005 - California League (CalL1)
Modesto Nuts News Release
STOCKTON The Stockton Ports shutout the Modesto Nuts Thursday night 10-0, the first time Modesto has been shut out in the 2005 season. Steve Sharpe, making his first start in the California League, threw five no-hit, shutout innings for the win. Jeff Muessig pitched three innings and allowed the Nuts only hit, an infield single by Erik Dean leading off the eighth inning. Marcus McBeth pitched the ninth inning and hit a batter and walked one, but retired the next three batters to secure the win.
The Ports scored seven runs on seven hits in the second inning off Modesto starter Marc Kaiser who took the loss. Kurt Suzuki had a two-run home run in the inning and Jed Morris had a two-run double as the Ports sent ten batters to the plate. Kaiser stuck around until being relieved in the seventh inning by Eudy Morel who allowed two inherited runners to score. Kaiser was charged with all ten runs, five of which were earned.
Joe Gaetti drew a walk in the ninth inning and extended his league-leading consecutive on-base streak to 49 games.
The Visalia Oaks beat the Bakersfield Blaze 3-1 Thursday night. Modesto's magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now one. They need one win in the final four games of the season or one Bakersfield loss to qualify for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division of the California League.
Modesto travels to Visalia for the final series of the season. Juan Morillo goes to the mound for Modesto against the Oaks T.A. Fulmer. Game time at Recreation Park in Visalia is 7:05 p.m.
