Modesto Nuts News Release
STOCKTON The Stockton Ports beat the Modesto Nuts Wednesday night in 10 innings, 6-5. Modesto reliever Tomas Santiago set the table for the Ports with three walks in the 10th. With one out Ports catcher Kurt Suzuki then lined a base hit to score the game winner. It was the Port's third straight one-run victory over Modesto. Elvis Avendano picked up the win with one inning of relief.
Modesto scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Stockton tied the game when Modesto starter Steven Register walked in a run in the fourth. Modesto took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning when Ian Stewart blasted his 15th home run of the season over the left-center field fence. Stockton came back against Register with three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Danny Putnam's two-run home run and an RBI double by Dustin Majewski to tie the game.
With two outs in the ninth inning, Joe Gaetti blasted a 3-2 pitch from Ports reliever Brigmer Leon over the left field fence for his 18th home run of the season and a 5-4 lead. It was the fourth hit of the night for Gaetti who extended his league-leading on-base streak to 48 consecutive games.
Scott Beerer, in his first save opportunity with Modesto after saving 23 games in Ashville, gave up a lead off double to Ports designated hitter Jed Morris who then scored on a Putnam base hit.
Modesto missed a chance in the top half of the 10th inning. After a lead off walk to Ian Stewart, Christian Colonel popped up a bunt attempt and then Avendano picked Stewart off first base before another pitch was thrown. Kyle Wilson singled with two outs and his pinch runner was left stranded when Avendano struck out Michael Davies, who had three hits on the night, to end the inning.
Santiago walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th and Suzuki lined the game-winning hit to center field to win the game for Stockton.
The series concludes Thursday night as Modesto send Mark Kaiser to the mound. He will be opposed by the Ports' Steven Sharpe. Game time at Banner Island Ballpark is 7:05 p.m.
