Idaho Steelheads News Release
Stockton, CA (11/24/13) - Andrew Clark tapped home a centering feed with just 46 seconds left in overtime Sunday evening, allowing the Stockton Thunder to escape with a 4-3 win over the Idaho Steelheads at Stockton Arena.
Idaho (8-5-3 overall, 19 points) earned one point in the standings by taking the game to overtime, meaning it has picked up at least one point in ten of its past 13 games.
The first goal of the game went to Idaho as Tommy Grant finished an Anthony Nigro centering feed on the power play at 5:48 of the first period, his sixth goal of the season. Brooks Ostergard, making his first start of the season in net for Idaho, made that goal stand up through one period by stopping all 12 shots Stockton sent his way.
The Thunder would tie the game on an early power play in the second period, with Joey Martin knocking home a Corey Trivino feed from the top of the crease at the 57-second mark of the second. Stockton took advantage of a penalty assessed to Idaho late in the second on Brayden Irwin's fifth of the season at 18:37 to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead after two periods.
Idaho responded in the third with a pair of goals in a 31-second span. First, it was Grant again on the power play at 6:21 from Nigro and Mitch Wahl, to even the game up at two goals apiece. Then, at 6:52, Brett Robinson's centering feed from the left-wing wall found Tyler Gron in the slot for a quick shot past Brad Phillips to give Idaho a 3-2 lead.
Stockton tied the game at 12:05 of the third when JP Burkemper got a piece of Ryan Constant's point shot, changing the trajectory of the puck past Ostergard to square the score at 3-3. Ostergard made a big glove save with just six seconds left to force overtime but, in the overtime session, it was Clark securing the game-winner for the Thunder from the left-wing post at the 4:14 mark. It's Clark's second career OT game-winner against Idaho, as he ended Game 2 of the ECHL Western Conference finals in May with a goal.
Ostergard took the loss in his Steelheads' debut, collecting 29 saves on 33 shots. Phillips got the win, stopping 27 of 30. Both teams had success on the power play, Idaho was 2-5 on the man advantage while Stockton was 2-3.
Idaho returns home on Tuesday, November 26, against the Las Vegas Wranglers. Tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office at 208-331-8497.
