Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (10-1-1-3), back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell to the Bakersfield Condors (2-11-0-1) on Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 9,584 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
With 3:39 left on the clock in the first period, Chad Costello netted his first Reign goal of the season. The Reign caught the Condors defense out of position and were able to get behind them to set up a 2-on-0 situation. A quick give-and-go play between Matt White and Costello left Chet Pickard out of position for Costello to bang it in giving the Reign a 1-0 lead. Derek Couture tacked on the secondary assist.
The second period went scoreless with the Reign outshooting the Condors 7-3. Bakersfield had a huge chance when they moved in to the Reign zone and a shot brought Michael Hutchinson out of position leaving the Reign net open. The puck rebounded and was sliding across the crease, almost making it over the goal line, until Matt Clune skated in and swatted it out to keep the Condors off the scoreboard.
Bakersfield got on the board at 4:31 when Jordan Knackstedt, Wes Cunningham, and Michael Neal made a rush past the Reign defense and were able to get close enough to get a shot past Hutchinson. Knackstedt was the one to find the back of the net to tie the game. Less than two minutes later, Neal got the eventual game-winner at 6:27; this time with a well-placed shot from the slot. Louke Oakley earned the lone assist on the goal that put Bakersfield up 2-1.
In his sixth straight game, Hutchinson took his first regulation loss with 10 saves on 12 shots; Pickard earned the win stopping 22 of 23 shots.
