Points Starting to Pile Up
Saturday night's 5-4 win gave the Wheeling Nailers at least one point in five consecutive games, as they enter Sunday afternoon's tilt with a 4-0-1 record during that span. After starting the season with a 1-2-0 record in just three October contests, the Nailers have begun to click in November, posting a 6-3-2 mark, which includes a 6-2-2 record from November 2nd to now. That night, Wheeling rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Greenville 5-3 at WesBanco Arena. The win at Fort Wayne also gives the Nailers a .500 record on the road, at 3-3-2.
Slipping Back to the Pack
The Cincinnati Cyclones blew out of the gates this season, as they rattled off victories in each of their first seven games, looking to repeat last season's success, when they won the North Division, while also reaching the Eastern Conference Final. On November 9th, the Cyclones suffered their first loss of the season, as the Fort Wayne Komets erased a 2-1 deficit for a 3-2 win at US Bank Arena. Cincinnati has gone 3-4-0 in its last seven games, winning a pair of shootouts against Greenville and Evansville, before blanking Reading 3-0 on Saturday night.
It's Not Over Until We Say It Is
Through the first 14 games of the season, the Nailers have saved their best for last, outscoring their opposition 33-25 in the final two periods. After letting a 2-1 lead slip away on Wednesday in Reading, Wheeling rebounded for its fifth comeback win of the campaign on Saturday night, erasing 3-0 and 4-3 deficits, for a 5-4 triumph against the Fort Wayne Komets. Carter Rowney knotted the game the second time, with 32 ticks left on the clock, giving the team its second tying goal in the final minute of regulation, as well as its third goal with the netminder pulled for an extra attacker.
A Rat for his Former Teams
For the second Saturday in a row, Wheeling defenseman Mike Ratchuk took on one of his former teams, and for the second Saturday in a row, he had a major impact on the game. Last Saturday, Ratchuk broke a 4-4 tie with 2:23 remaining, lifting the Nailers past the Elmira Jackals, 5-4. This Saturday, Mike was at it again, as he racked up two goals and two assists, including the overtime winner, once again breaking a 4-4 tie for a 5-4 win, this time against the Fort Wayne Komets. Wheeling does not have any former Cyclones on its roster.
