Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Wheeling's Zack Torquato scored twice as the Cincinnati Cyclones (10-5-0-0) fell to the Nailers (8-5-0-2) in their second meeting of the season by a 4-2 final score in front of 1,623 at U.S. Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon. Netminder Mike Condon (W, 27 saves, 6-3-0-1) turned aside 27 of the 29 shots he faced while his team exceled on special teams, successfully killing seven penalties and scoring a short-handed goal in the tilt.
The Nailers shot out to a torrid start when Anton Zlobin tipped in his second goal of the season at 1:52 following a slapshot from the blue line by Matt Grassi. Just 16 seconds later, Nailers' leading point scorer Torquato buried his fourth tally of the season, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Cyclones found new life, however, when Dan Eves recorded his first goal of the season on a rebound that found its way past Condon. Despite being outshot 12-10 in the frame, the Cyclones escaped a couple close calls and entered the first intermission trailing by one.
After Grassi was called for tripping early in the second stanza, Torquato struck again, scoring a short-handed goal at 4:11. Less than a minute later, Josh Birkholz scored a crucial bounce-back tally for the home team when he backhanded a loose puck past Condon at 5:04. However, when Trevor Lewis was penalized for slashing later in the period, Scott Zurevinski extended his team's lead to 4-2 when he chipped a rebound home past Michael Houser (L, 18 saves, 2-2-0-0) on the power play at 14:16.
Although the Cyclones outshot the opposition 6-1 in the final session, they failed to score on a handful of power play opportunities in the frame, helping secure the win for the Nailers.
"We need to limit the turnovers, that's for sure, and get the [power play] worked on," said Cyclones captain David MacDonald. "Turnovers killed us tonight, so we're back to the drawing board for the next game...Our [defensive zone] has been better the past couple games. So, if we keep improving on that, that's a big part of our game right there. Get more shots on the net and stay out of the penalty box."
The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night to battle the Wheeling Nailers at 7:30pm. The game will feature $1 beers and a "Movember" Mustache Party!
