Stingrays Weekly: Stingrays Set New Team Record And Defeat Charlotte In Mini-Series

The South Carolina Stingrays wrapped up a five-game series against the Charlotte Checkers and set a new team record of 13 consecutive wins for a week record of 3-1. The Stingrays traveled the Charlotte Wednesday night and skated away with a dramatic 3-2 victory in overtime. Stingrays forwards Gregg Johnson and Matt Fornataro netted goals in the third period and defenseman Josh Godfrey scored on the power play in overtime to seal the win for the Stingrays. The battle continued in Charlotte Friday night to start the fifth consecutive three-in-three weekend for the Stingrays. The Stingrays grabbed a three-goal lead early in the third period and held on for a 4-3 win. Stingrays rookies Nikita Kashirsky and Rob Ricci each added to their goal total along with forwards Matt Scherer and Keith Johnson. The series moved south for Saturday's contest at North Charleston Coliseum. Stingrays forwards Trent Campbell and Scherer netted goals 30 seconds apart as the Stingrays doubled up the Checkers 4-2 and set a new team record with their 13 consecutive win. Fornataro and K. Johnson also potted goals in the victory. With their final game before the holiday break, the Stingrays finished the five-game series back in Charlotte and suffered their first loss since November 22 as the Checkers scored two third-period goals in a 4-2 victory. Fornataro started the scoring for the Stingrays late in the first period and Ricci gave South Carolina a 2-1 lead early in the second before Charlotte retaliated with three unanswered goals. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Checkers.

Taking the Lead:
The Stingrays are first in the South Division with 48 points and first overall in the American Conference.
The Stingrays set a new the record of 13 consecutive wins on Saturday against the Charlotte Checkers. The winning streak ranks fourth best in the ECHL.
Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford stands 8th in the ECHL with a 2.77 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. Ford also leads the league in wins with 15 and ranks first in minutes played and saves with 1298 and 630. Rookie goaltender Braden Holtby ranks 13th in the ECHL with a 2.95 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.
Stingrays rookie forward Nikita Kashirsky is 2nd among ECHL rookies with 30 points and ranks 2nd in rookie shots with 98. Kashirsky is also 1st overall in the ECHL with five game-winning goals. Forward Robb Ricci sits 8th among ECHL rookies with 24 points.
Stingrays forward Keith Johnson has climbed up the ECHL leader board and holds the 14th spot with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points.
Stingrays forward Matt Fornataro is currently on a nine-game point streak (6g, 7a) and ranks 9th overall in the ECHL with 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points. Stingrays defenseman Josh Godfrey is riding a six-game assist streak (7a).
