South Carolina Stingrays News Release

The Week That Was...

The South Carolina Stingrays set new ECHL records for the longest overall winning streak (19 games), longest road winning streak (11 games) and longest shutout streak and are now riding the second longest winning streak in North American professional hockey as they defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators in a three-game in three-day series last week for a week record of 3-0-0-0 and improved the overall record to 37-18-1-6.

The Stingrays traveled the The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia on Friday for the final time this season and skated away with a 4-0 victory. Defenseman Drew MacKenzie pitched in two assists and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stopped all 19 shots faced.

The two sides collided at the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday for Military Appreciation Night with the Stingrays scoring early and often in a 6-0 triumph. Defenseman Marcus Perrier scored four goals and an assist and forward Andrew Rowe added one goal and three assists. Jakaitis earned his third-straight shutout to tie an ECHL record and third consecutive blanking of the Gladiators stopping all 21 shots. During the run and just over a period of shutout work against Greenville on March 8, Jakaitis set a new ECHL record for the longest shutout streak with 259:32, breaking the previous record set back in 1996-97 by Darryl Paquette of Hampton Roads. It is the second time Jakaitis has posted three straight shutouts, the first time back in 2011-12 as a member of the Gladiators defeating the Stingrays in three straight games.

Sunday marked the final regular-season meeting between the Stingrays and Gladiators. Forward Joe Devin buried two power-play goals and newcomer Brett Cameron added his first professional goal and an assist to help the Stingrays to a 4-3 victory. Goaltender Jeff Wyer made his first pro start and earned his first pro win making 23 saves. The Stingrays finished the head-to-head series against their most common opponent this season with a 13-3-0-0 record.
