
Stingrays Topple Wings 5-1

Kalamazoo, MI -The South Carolina Stingrays (34-26-2-3) defeated the Kalamazoo Wings (34-22-2-5) 5-1 in the opening contest of a three-game in three-night road trip Thursday night at Wings Stadium. Forwards Trent Campbell (2g, 1a) and Tommy Goebel (1g, 2a) registered three-point contests.
The Stingrays grabbed the opening marker at 14:08 of the first period when forward Jordan Pietrus slipped a backhanded shot under the blocker of Wings goaltender Ryan Nie from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Patrick Cullity and forward Grant McNeill earned assists.
Campbell made it 2-0 at 1:39 of the second frame from Goebel. Kalamazoo defenseman A.J. Thelen cut the lead in half at 9:23 sneaking a shot past Stingrays netminder Shane Owen from the left-wing circle. Forwards Patrick Asselin and Kory Karlander recorded assists.
Rays forward Ryan Del Monte reclaimed the two-goal lead on the power play at 13:25 from Goebel and defenseman Joe Finley. Moments later, Goebel buried his 17 goal of the season from Campbell and forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien at 17:04. Campbell wrapped up the game scoring with a late power-play goal at 19:57 of the second stanza from forward Matt Scherer and O'Brien. The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the Stingrays.
Owen picked up the victory stopping 25 of 26 Wings shots. Nie dropped to 27-14-2-3 blocking 28 of 33 Stingrays chances. The Stingrays finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play while the Wings went 0-for-3.
