South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - Stephen Werner got his second goal of the playoffs at the perfect time, as the South Carolina Stingrays staved off elimination on his overtime game winning power play goal at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"I love how the guys came out again here tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We worked hard and finally got this first win. Now we just need to make sure we are on the same page, because we know it's going to be just as hard tomorrow."

Like in the previous two games the teams have played, South Carolina got out to an early lead in the first period. Marty Guerin got his second goal of the playoffs at 3:46 from Trent Campbell and Werner to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. But a short handed goal by Louis Goulet at 8:35 tied the game up at one still in the first period. It remained that way until Chris Chaput got his first playoff goal of the year at 16:28 from Sasha Pokulok and Sean Collins, giving the Rays their second lead of the night, and the edge after one period of play.

In the second period, the Stingrays controlled most of the play, as the 16-5 shots on goal differential reflects, but were out scored 1-0 when Chase Watson got his first playoff tally at 12:36 to even the game up at two. The score would remain that way throughout the rest of the second period and all of the third period, leading to the second overtime game in as many contests between these two clubs.

In the overtime period, the Stingrays got a four minute power play when Matt Auffrey was called for a high sticking double minor after hitting Travis Morin. It didn't take long for the Rays to take advantage of their opportunity, and just :22 seconds later, Werner got the game winner from Pokulok and Rory Rawlyk.

With the win, the Rays make the series 2-1 in favor of Augusta, and they will try to tie things up tomorrow night in game four of this best of five game series.

The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Bobby Goepfert who stopped 41 of the 44 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-6 on the power play, while killing off all three short handed situations they faced.

The Rays are back in action tomorrow night as they look to force a game five in their series against the Augusta Lynx. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
