Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors opened up the 2008 Kelly Cup Playoffs with the first place Victoria Salmon Kings last week, earning a 1-1 split in the first two games, both in Victoria. The Condors were victorious in Game 1 with a dramatic overtime winner from D Kevin Truelson to spoil the Salmon Kings' home ice advantage.

The Condors won 2-1 in Game 1 of the series last Thursday, but couldn't fend off a late Salmon Kings rally in the third period of Game 2 Saturday, dropping a narrow 4-3 decision. Games 3, 4 and 5 will be this week at Rabobank Arena on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. All three games start at 7 p.m., and the doors open at 6 p.m.

THIS WEEK (ALL TIMES PACIFIC):

Tuesday, April 15 vs. Victoria (7 p.m.) Wednesday, April 16 vs. Victoria (7 p.m.) Saturday, April 19 vs. Victoria (7 p.m.) WEEK IN REVIEW (Home team in CAPS): Thursday, April 10 Condors 2 vs. VICTORIA 1 (OT) D Kevin Truelson blasted home the game- winning goal just 1:55 into overtime of Game 1, securing a 1-0 series lead for the Condors. LW Mark Derlago scored the first goal of the series just 43 seconds into the contest, and G Yutaka Fukufuji turned away 39 shots for the win. Fukufuji made 28 saves through the first 40 minutes before a tally by LW Kevin Estrada midway through the third knotted the score.

Saturday, April 12 VICTORIA 4 vs. Condors 3 The Condors received goals from RW Chris Di Ubaldo, F Andrew Ianiero and F Alexander Naurov to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. But a three-goal rally by the Salmon Kings thwarted Bakersfield's opportunity to take a two-game series lead. Victoria F Ryan Wade completed his hat trick with two shorthanded goals near the middle of the third frame to tie it, and the game winner came with just 3:30 remaining in regulation.

PLAYER NOTES:

Three of the five Condors goal scorers this playoff season recorded their first career playoff goal: LW Mark Derlago and RW Chris Di Ubaldo, both rookies, and F Alexander Naurov, who is in his second pro season in North America. Naurov appeared in eight Kelly Cup Playoff games for Idaho last season. F Andrew Ianiero extended his own team record for career playoff goals on Saturday, recording the 12th tally of his Condors career. Since March 17, G Yutaka Fukufuji has a .932 save percentage, 2.40 goals against average and leads the ECHL with eight wins. He is tied for sixth in the ECHL with a .936 save percentage in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Despite finishing 21st in the ECHL in penalty kill during the regular season, the Condors have been perfect in shutting down the Victoria power play on 11 opportunities. Bakersfield is one of only three teams still perfect on the PK in the playoffs. D Jay Langager had an assist in each of the two contests in Victoria last week. The winner of the Condors-Salmon Kings series will advance against the winner of the Fresno-Utah series. The Grizzlies won Game 1 of that series, 6-1 yesterday, and Game 2 is tonight in Fresno. F Dale Reinhardt remains on the 7-day IR, but is eligible to be activated today. D Reagan Leslie and F Matt Tyree remain on the 3-day IR, though both are eligible to be activated.
