South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Charlotte, NC - Bobby Goepfert has played just three games for the South Carolina Stingrays, all of them against the Charlotte Checkers, all of them wins. Goepfert stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced as the Rays beat the Checkers by a final of 6-1 in Charlotte.
"We started out a little slow once again," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But the guys are starting to play well together both offensively and defensively."
The Rays got out to an early lead on Steve Pinizzotto's third goal of the year. After Jeff Jakaitis turned aside a shot from Trent Campbell, Pinizzotto put in the rebound to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. The assists went to Campbell and Pierre-Luc O'Brien at 13:19.
In the second period the Rays pushed the lead to two when Matt Scherer got his first goal of the season. The goal came off a deflection by Julian Brouillette and was assisted by Keith Johnson and Paul Kelly at 6:30. After Charlotte got on the board with Mike Taylor's third goal of the year, Michael Dubuc got his first goal of the night, his eighth of the year, to make it a two goal lead once again.
The Stingrays pulled away in the third period when Maxime Lacroix got his fifth goal of the season, a power play goal at 1:24. Travis Morin and Dubuc got the assists on the goal making the score 4-1. Five minutes later, Keith Johnson got his second goal of the year from Pinizzotto and Kelly, another goal on the power play. The Rays made it a five goal game when Dubuc got his second tally of the night, his ninth of the year, from Sasha Pokulok and Johnson, a five on three goal at 11:14, making the score 6-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced. The losing goalie was Jakaitis who stopped 34 of the 40 shots he faced. The Rays went three for six on the power play while killing off all seven short handed situations they faced.
