D-Man O'Brien assigned to Blades

ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades president and general manager Craig Brush along with head coach Malcolm Cameron announced that defenseman Doug O'Brien has been assigned to the club by the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

O'Brien joins the Everblades after starting the 2008-09 season with the Americans where he picked up two assists in 12 games. The 24-year-old brings National Hockey League experience with him to the Everblades, having played five games in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2005-06. Last season the St. John's, Newfoundland native played in Finland with Lukko Rauma where he posted nine points (5g, 4a) and 51 penalty minutes in 39 games.

O'Brien, who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 6th round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, is in his fifth professional season. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound blue-liner has spent the majority of his career in the AHL with Springfield, Portland and Rochester. Overall O'Brien has 85 points (22g, 63a) and 262 PIM in 282 career games.
