South Carolina Stingrays News Release

Duluth, GA - Travis Morin scored the lone goal for the South Carolina Stingrays with just over a minute to play in the game, but it would not be enough as they would fall to the Gwinnett Gladiators by a final of 2-1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

"This was definitely a hard fought game on both sides, as I expected it would be," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We took it to the bitter end. Certainly you hate to lose, but I liked the way we played this game."

The Gwinnett Gladiators got out to an early lead on Myles Stoesz's second goal of the season at the 2:01 mark of the first period. The Stingrays improved their play after the initial flurry by the Gladiators, but were unable to get any of their 14 first period shots past him, as they skated to the locker room down by one.

The Rays had to kill off a penalty to start off the second period, but after the kill, the period played much like the first one. Both teams had chances but neither team was able to get anything by the goaltenders. The intensity certainly picked up, as both Mike Curry and Nate Kiser were involved in fights, but the score remained the same after two periods of play as it did after one; 1-0 Gwinnett.

With Gwinnett on the power play, they would find a wide open Jeff Mason who would score it past Ian Vigier to make it a 2-0 game. With under two minutes to play, the Rays would pull their goalie in favor of the extra attacker. It would pay dividends as Travis Morin would get his 12th goal of the year on a one timer past Joe Fallon. The goal came at 18:52 and was assisted by Keith Johnson and Josh Godfrey and made it a 2-1 game. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Rays would get, as they would fall in this game by that very score.

The Rays will be back next Saturday when they travel to Charlotte to take on the Checkers. Game time will be at 7:30. You can here the game live on ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos Pre-game show beginning at 7:15. Three Stingrays will be playing in the ECHL All-Star game in Reading, PA on Wednesday starting at 7:05, with Travis Morin, Johann Kroll and Michal Neuvirth getting the nod.
