Stingers Topped by Huskies, Continue Seven-Game Homestand Tomorrow Night
June 7, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Willmar Stingers News Release
Willmar, Minn.- Willmar's offense started the night with a bang, but Duluth held the Stingers at bay the rest of the way en route to a 7-2 win Sunday at Bill Taunton Stadium.
In his first game back at the Beehive since 2013, Tyler Leffler crushed his first home run of the season in his first at bat of the night in the second inning. But the Stingers (6-5) couldn't muster much more offense the rest of the night, as the Huskies (8-4) tied the game in the next half inning and took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning.
But the Stingers battled back and put a rally together to open the sixth inning. Lucas Tancas walked to open the sixth, went to second on a passed ball and then third on a deep fly out to center. But on a wild pitch with Leffler at the plate, Tancas tried to score and was called out on a close play to swing the momentum back to Duluth's favor.
The Huskies scored three more times, one each over the course of the next three innings to make it a 7-1 lead.
But Leffler continued his strong night at the plate and jumpstarted a rally in the bottom of the ninth. He led off the inning with his third hit of the night and came all the way around to score. The Huskies cut the Stingers' rally short though to end the game.
Despite the loss, the Stingers still have six more games in the homestand, and will continue it tomorrow night against Duluth with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
