Stingers Outduel Huskies in Game 1 of Doubleheader
August 1, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Duluth Huskies News Release
The Duluth Huskies entered Wednesday with a two-game lead over the Willmar Stingers for first place in the North Division but were unable to add to that lead as the Stingers pulled within a game with a 3-1 victory in game one of a day-night doubleheader.
It was a pitcher's duel in the early going as Duluth's Hayden Shenefield (Cal-State Northridge) and Willmar's Louie Varland (Concordia-St. Paul) both had strong starts as the game went into the fourth inning scoreless.
The Stingers would then get on the board in the fourth inning when Tyler Reichenborn (Iowa Western) scored on a wild pitch to give Willmar the 1-0 lead. That wouldn't be the end for Willmar in the inning as Jayson Newman (Cal-State Northridge) took Shenefield, his college teammate, out of the ballpark after a long 10-pitch at bat to improve the Stingers lead to 3-0.
Duluth would get back in the ballgame when Nicholas Sogard (Loyola-Marymount) reached on an error to being the sixth. He would come home off the bat of Chris Gilbody (Georgetown College) to pull the Huskies within two runs at 3-1.
But that was the only run Duluth managed to put on the board as they were stymied by Stingers pitching all game long. In the defeat, starter Hayden Shenefield tossed a complete game giving up three earned runs while striking out three Stingers. It is the first complete game tossed by a Huskies starter this season, but it goes down in a losing effort as Shenefield suffers his first losing decision of the year.
Duluth and Willmar will battle it out again on Wednesday night in game 2 of the day-night double header, with game time scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on 92.1 THE FAN in Duluth.
