Madison Mallards News Release

Madison, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (15-11, 43-19) were defeated by the Rockford Rivets (9-18, 27-34) in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Warner Park. The Mallards offense was held in check all evening and a three-run seventh inning by the Rivets allowed Rockford to snap Madison's four-game win streak. A key two-run double by Rockford designated hitter Jimmy Burnette gave the Rivets the lead for good in the pivotal seventh inning.

Turning Point

Mallards starter Jonah Smith(Creighton) made his first start of the season an effective one, lasting 4.0 innings while shutting out the Rivets, allowing only three hits and punching out a pair of batters. Smith gave way to Andrew Baker (Florida) who was effective and kept the Rivets off of the board in the fifth and sixth. Madison was able to open the scoring in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Schwecke (UW-Milwaukee) a few pitches after Garrett Kueber(Austin Peay) led off the inning with a double.

However, the Rivets responded with a big seventh inning, scoring runs on a groundout back to Baker and on a two-run double down the left field line by Jimmy Burnette. The double chased Baker out of the ballgame and gave the Rivets a 3-1 advantage.
