Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - The Stingers tried to stage a rally after an early deficit on Thursday night, but that rally fell short in a 11-7 loss to Thunday Bay at Bill Taunton Stadium.
The Border Cats scored three runs each in the second and third innings, but the Stingers didn't go away after finding themselves in a 6-0 hole after the top of the third inning. Willmar answered the Border Cats' three-run third with a three-run third of its own to cut the lead in half.
Brandon Perez and Tyler Smith both reached base to start the rally for the Stingers in the third, and Danny Pardo singled to load the bags. Justin Toerner followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Stingers their first run, and Greg Lambert drove in the first of his three runs on the night with an RBI single right after Toerner.
Lambert was the big force at the plate offensively for the Stingers throughout the night. Lambert had his second three-hit game of the season, and hit his third home run of the season in the fifth inning, a two-run shot to left field that cut the Thunder Bay lead to just one.
But that was as close as the Stingers would get the rest of the way, as the Border Cats added one run in the six, one in the seventh and three runs in the ninth.
Trailing by six going to the bottom of the ninth, the Stingers offense came alive again. Willmar loaded the bases, and Luke Becker singled home a pair to trim the deficit to four. But Billy Quirke grounded out after that in his first at bat of the night to end the game.
