Sting Drop 6-5 Road Duel against Storm
October 6, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
The Sarnia Sting visited the Guelph Storm on Friday night.
It was a wild, back-and-forth duel at the Sleeman Centre. Though it's only the second full week of the season, it's clear that the pace has reached full speed ahead.
In the first period tonight, Guelph took a quick 1-0 lead on the powerplay. Storm defenceman Ryan Merkley swept through traffic and dished to forward Nate Schnarr. Schnarr put one past Sting goaltender Aidan Hughes.
Using typical Sting style, we responded shortly after. Midway through the first, Sting rookie forward Jacob Perreault tied the game. Sarnia used some stellar powerplay puck movement to work the puck from Adam Ruzicka low to Hugo Leufvenius. The towering Swedish skater then found Perreault coming down the backdoor. Perreault just got enough on his shot to lift it over Storm goalie Anthony Popovich.
Before the end of the first, Sting forward Brayden Guy gave us the lead. Guy tipped in a point shot from defenceman Mitch Eliot. And as he always seems to do, Guy scored a second goal moments later. Guy accepted a smooth outlet from linemate Calvin Martin, went in alone, and popped the puck through Popovich. Guy's first and second goals of the season gave the Sting a 3-1 lead after one period of play.
In the second, Storm forward Tag Bertuzzi put one past Hughes six minutes in. Assists went to Keegan Stevenson and rookie blueliner Danil Chayka.
Sting forward Sean Josling responded just a minute later. Ruzicka and Leufvenius once again played setup men on the powerplay. This time, it was Ruzicka with the primary assist. Ruzicka found Josling in the centre slot. The Sting were up 4-2.
Guelph responded with three consecutive goals to end the second and begin the third. Cam Hillis scored one, and Storm captain Isaac Ratcliffe potted a pair. It was now 5-4 for Guelph.
Halfway through the third, veteran Sting forward Anthony Salinitri scored his third of the season. Salinitri gathered a loose puck in the right slot and went shelf on Popovich. Tie game, 5-5.
Schnarr scored for Guelph as the clock wound down to end the third period. Tonight's final score was 6-5 in favour of the Storm.
Hughes made some clutch saves throughout the evening, and stopped 37 of 43 shots against. Tonight's official box score can be viewed here.
We'll see you back home tomorrow night as we host the Kitchener Rangers for the first time this season!
