Stevenson's Mound Surge Not Enough as Spikes Fall

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Trent Stevenson settled down after allowing two early runs, and Kirk Singer collected a pair of hits, but the State College Spikes' late comeback came up just short in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Jamestown Jammers on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Stevenson (0-3) yielded a pair of runs to Jamestown (31-32) in the first inning when a trio of hits culminated in Josh Adams's single to bring in both markers. The right-hander, who has allowed eight of the 16 runs scored against him with the Spikes (24-39) in 2011 in the initial frame, yielded four hits and hit two batters afterwards without giving up another run.

The Jammers added two more runs in the seventh inning off of reliever Cliff Archibald on a double by Austin Barnes and a sacrifice fly by Adams to take a 4-0 edge. Singer, who entered the game in the second inning, then doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh for State College and crossed the plate on Roderrick Jones's RBI double down the left-field line for the Spikes' first run.

Two batters later, Taylor Lewis beat out a tapper to the first-base side to score Jones and bring State College within two runs. However, the Spikes could get no closer by the end of the game.

State College excelled on defense during the game, with Alex Fuselier throwing out Barnes at third base from right field in the third inning, then making a diving catch to rob Barnes of a base hit in the fourth. The Spikes also turned three double plays on the night in the infield.

Stevenson notched a strikeout and allowed a total of seven hits in the game. Stetson Allie, the Pirates' second-round draft pick in 2010, pitched a scoreless eighth inning, walking one batter and striking one out while eliciting an inning-ending double play.

Jamestown starter Matthew Neil (2-3) made his second start against the Spikes and pitched into the seventh inning again for the win. Neil yielded both State College runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over 6 2/3 innings. Alfredo Buret (10) allowed a hit, but struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Jammers play the middle game of their three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Matt Benedict (2-3) on the mound for State College. Benedict went five innings on the mound against Hudson Valley in his last outing, striking out a career-high six. Jamestown will go with right-hander Dejai Oliver (1-3) on the hill.

The first 1,000 fans of all ages will receive a Spikes Beverage Stein, presented by P.J. Harrigan's, when the gates open at 6 p.m. to the general public.
