Jamestown Jammers News Release
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - All season long Matthew Neil has been victimized by late rallies by the opposition; however, that was not the case on Tuesday as the Jamestown Jammers held on to beat State College, 4-2, at Medlar Park.
Neil, who had no decisions in his previous ï¬Âve outings, turned in the Jammers third straight quality start to improve to 2-3 on the season. He went 6.2 innings, gave up six hits and two earned runs, walked one and fanned four. The victory also gets the Jammers back to a game under .500 at 31-32.
Jamestown jumped out to an early lead as three of the ï¬Ârst four batters reached. Ryan Goetz and Austin Barnes had back-to-back singles to begin the game before Josh Adams ripped a single to center to score both runners.
In the fourth and ï¬Âfth, the Jammers had runners in scoring position with less than two outs; however, the purple and green did not break the game open until the seventh inning with another pair of runs.
Marquise Cooper had a bunt sngle then stole second base to start the frame before Barnes smacked a double to left. Bran McConkey moved him over to third with a single, and Adams hit a sacriï¬Âce ï¬ây to give Jamestown some breathing room at 4-0.
With Neil tiring, the Spikes immediately responded in the bottom of the seventh inning on a pair of doubles by Kirk Singer and Rodarrick Jones. Taylor Lewis had a RBI single to knock Neil from the game to cut Jamestown's advantage to two before Brad Mincey got out of the jam.
Mincey worked a perfect eighth before Alfredo Buret slammed the door in the ninth to pick up his 10th save.
Barnes anchored the Jamestown attack with three hits, including a double, two runs and a RBI. McConkey added three singles, while Adams had two hits and three RBI.
For State College, Trent Stevenson was the tough-luck loser. He went ï¬Âve innings, allowed seven hits, two runs and struck out one. Singer had a pair of hits with a double and run scored, and Jones had the only other extra-base hit for the Spikes.
The two teams will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
