San Rafael Pacifics News Release

MAUI - San Rafael Pacifics starter Matt Durkin wasn't sharp as San Rafael lost 8-1 to the Maui Na Koa Ikaika at Iron Mahera Stadium on Friday night.

In his first start since getting roughed up by the Hawaii Stars on July 17, Durkin (3-6) allowed six runs on six hits and walked four in 4 1/3 innings. It was Durkin's longest outing since he went 7 innings on June 29 against the Sonoma County Grapes.

Durkin wasn't done any favors, as the Pacifics defense committed three errors and the offense tallied just five singles.

With another premature exit from a starter, and a taxed bullpen, Pacifics Manager Mike Marshall turned to outfielder Steve Detwiler for an inning of relief. The San Rafael High grad worked the eighth inning, allowed a hit, two runs and walked a batter in his first pitching appearance as a professional.

Zack Pace, Steve Boggs, Maikel Jova, Will Wright and Jon Hurst all had hits for San Rafael (28-18). No Pacifics had more than one hit, and Wright scored the team's lone run.

Chad Blackwell (6-1) went 7 innings for Maui (24-22), allowed just four hits, struck out nine, and beat the Pacifics for the second time in four starts against San Rafael in 2012.

First-place San Rafael plays a doubleheader against Maui on Saturday at Iron Maehara Stadium, concluding a six-game series. The two teams are separated by just four games in the North American League's North Division standings with eight games remaining between the two this season.

First pitch of Game 1 on Saturday is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. PDT, the Game 2 is slated for 8:35 p.m. Follow the action on www.Pacificsbaseball.com, watch the game on Game Live, or follow the Pacifics on Twitter.com, @SRPacifics.
