Cats Add Veteran Pitcher
August 4, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
Fort Worth Cats News Release
FORT WORTH-- In order to boost an already superior pitching staff, the Fort Worth Cats' coaches announced today the signing of veteran pitcher and former major leaguer Rick Bauer.
Bauer was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the 1997 amateur draft. The right-hander from Garden Grove, California was a starting pitcher in the Orioles minor league system from 1997 through 2001, compiling a 41-39 record in 119 games (114 starts) with a 4.39 ERA in over 660 innings pitched.
Bauer made his major league debut in a start against the Seattle Mariners on September 2, 2001, a 1-0 loss in which he surrendered just one run on three hits and two walks in six and one-thirds of an inning. The 35 year old pitched primarily in relief for Baltimore from 2001 through 2005, making 116 relief appearances and nine starts and compiling an 8-13 record with a 4.58 ERA in 240 innings pitched.
Bauer signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers before the 2005 season began. He was called up to the Rangers April 7, 2006 and remained with the team throughout the 2006 season. In 57 relief appearances and one start, he pitched 71 innings and posted a 3-1 record with two saves and a career-best 3.55 ERA. His career ERA stands at 4.51 with 185 strikeouts. He last signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers on February 25, 2012 but was released shortly after.
Rich Bauer takes the place of starter James Giulietti. The lefty was placed on the inactive list Saturday morning as a precautionary measure. Giulietti last played on August 2 versus San Angelo, where he went five innings pitched and gave up two earned runs to lower his ERA to 5.81.
Bauer is available Saturday evening out of the bullpen as the Fort Worth Cats host the Abilene Prairie Dogs in a series finale doubleheader. First pitch is at 6:05.
