Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
FORT WORTH - Six days ago it was Bryan Fogle's home run that led the Prairie Dogs out from the depths of seven-losing streak. On Saturday night in Fort Worth, the power-hitting righty did it again, cranking a two-run blast in the top of the eighth inning. The swing accounted for all the scoring in game one of a double header as the Dogs beat the Cats 2-0 at La Grave Field. In game two it was the Cats who pitched the shutout, earning the split with a 3-0 triumph.
On a day that featured masterful starting pitching from both squads, Blake Nation was the story through most of game one. Before Folge stole the spotlight, Nation - a 6'8", right-hander from Atlanta - allowed only two base runners over the first seven innings. In a scheduled seven-inning game, Nation returned for the top of the eighth of a scoreless tie. Geraldo Valentin started the inning with a single, and Danny Gonzalez bunted him to second. After a long battle with Nation, Fogle swatted a 2-2 pitch deep over the fence in left-center, catapulting the Dogs to a 2-0 win.
Woods Fines started game one for Abilene and turned in five scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks. In his final inning, Fines stranded the bases loaded when he got designated hitter Jon Dziomba to bounce a come-backer.
Kevin Gelinas pitched a pair of perfect innings to earn the victory, and Ray Silva set down the side in order on the way to his sixth save of the season.
Blake Nation was the loser after firing 71/3 innings and allowing only two runs on five hits, the righty also fanned nine batters.
Trevor Harden got the nod for Fort Worth in game two. The righty began the game by striking out the side in the top of the first inning. Thanks to a caught stealing and a double play, Harden faced only nine batters over the first three innings.
Scott Vander Weg was a spot-starter for Abilene in the night-cap. Vander Weg, customarily the club's set-up man, allowed three hits in the first inning - including a run-scoring single to Brandon Jones - as the Dogs fell behind 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, the righty yielded two more hits but stranded both runners to get out of trouble. After going down in order in the third, the Cats used Chad Gabriel's R.B.I. single in the fourth to make it 2-0. Gabriel later scored on Jon Dziomba's single to give Fort Worth a 3-0 edge and chase Vander Weg from the game.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Braden Tullis took the hill and threw one pitch in forcing Shelby Ford to bounce into a 3-2-3, inning ending double play.
But game two belonged to Trevor Harden. The righty from St. Petersburg, Florida held the Dogs scoreless in both the fifth and sixth innings before handed the ball to Jeff Jamnik in the top of the seventh. The closer yielded only a leadoff double to Kyle Nichols before locking down his 16th save of the year.
The Dogs remain on the road tomorrow as they travel to San Angelo for a 6:05 first pitch. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 5:55.
