San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- Powered by home runs from centerfielder Ronnie Gaines and first baseman Daryl Jones, the Colts defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners, 5-4, Saturday night at Foster Field.
Jones hit a leadoff homer in the seventh, giving the Colts a 4-3 lead. It was his sixth home run of the season. Gaines's home run gave San Angelo a 5-3 advantage, and proved to be the game-winning hit. For Gaines, it was his ninth homer of the year.
The Roadrunners hit two home runs of their own, but it was not enough to overpower Colts' starter Mike Hart.
Hart (5-1) struck out a season-high eight, and earned the win. He gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings. Hart struck out the side in the first, and had six strikeouts after just three innings.
First baseman Carlos Hereaud and shortstop Pascual Del Real both homered for Edinburg. It was Hereaud's fifth of the year, and just the first for Del Real.
Del Real's homer came with one out in the ninth inning, but Colts' closer Erik Draxton retired the next two batters to earn his league-best 17th save.
Edinburg starter Dave Dinelli pitched a complete game, but was hampered by wild pitches and fielding errors. Wild pitches allowed San Angelo's first and second runs to score. Meanwhile, two errors allowed Colts' base runners to advance in to scoring position and eventually come home.
Dinelli (3-8) allowed five runs, four earned on 15 hits in eight innings for the loss.
The win improves San Angelo to 35-33, while the loss drops Edinburg to 41-27. The Colts begin a four-game series against the Abilene Prairie Dogs Sunday night at Foster Field.
It will be another Grand Slam Sunday, sponsored by Fiddlestrings, and Dog Days of Summer, sponsored by the North Concho Veterinary Clinic. Bring your dogs to the ballpark, and get a chance to win a 47" HDTV. Gates open at 5:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
