Ottawa Lynx News Release
Lynx starter John Stephens threw 7.0 innings of three-hit shutout baseball, leading the Ottawa Lynx to a 5-0 victory over Syracuse on Monday afternoon. OF Midre Cummings and OF Tim Raines Jr. each had two hits and two RBI for the Lynx, while Stephens improved his record to 3-2 on the season.
The win improves Ottawa's record to 65-65 on the season. The Lynx now hit the road for a six-game road trip, featuring two games in Pawtucket, two in Rochester and two in Syracuse before the team returns to Ottawa on Monday, August 29th.
Lynx Player of the Game: Lynx starter John Stephens kept the SkyChiefs bats at bay, throwing 7.0 innings of shutout baseball to pick up his third win.
Recap: In a great pitcher's duel, Ottawa's John Stephens and the SkyChiefs' Shaun Marcum kept both teams off the board for the first 6.0 innings of the game. After Stephens retired the side in the top of the 7th, the Lynx offense gave him some support in the bottom half. Tim Raines Jr. led off the inning with a line drive single to right. One out later Raines Jr. stole second, prompting the SkyChiefs to intentionally walk Walter Young. Keith Reed then hit into a force out that saw Young erased at second, leaving runners on the corners for Midre Cummings. Cumming worked the count full before lining a double to left-center, scoring both runs and putting the Lynx up 2-0. After RHP Eddy Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 8th, the Lynx added some insurance in the bottom half. Ed Rogers worked a one-out walk and went to second on a Bernie Castro single. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, and then scored on Raines Jr.'s two-RBI line drive single to left (Raines Jr. advanced to second on the throw). Raines Jr. was not on base for long, as Napoleon Calzado then lined a single past first, driving home the final run in a 5-0 win. RHP Aaron Rakers came on to record the final three outs to send the Lynx on the road with a victory.
Next Game: The Lynx head to the road for a six game road trip, starting with a 7:05 pm game on Tuesday night in Pawtucket. The Lynx return home for their final homestand of the year on Monday, August 29th.
