SteepleCats Pounce All over Mainers

Sanford Mainers News Release

NORTH ADAMS, M.A. - The hometown North Adams SteepleCats (9-6) hopped right to it, scoring four runs in the first two innings to topple the Mainers (7-7) at Joe Wolfe Field.

North Adams scored twice in the first, and twice in the second to get up 4-0, all they would need to beat the Mainers for the second time this season, this time by a score 6-1.

In the first, the SteepleCats kicked off their half of the inning with three singles off of Mainers starter Nick Kuzia (Massachusetts Lowell). A ground out followed by a sacrifice fly would knock both of the runs, giving North Adams the early advantage.

Kuzia's next inning of work would again include a bases loaded situation. With a man away and runners at every base, an infield error allowed a run to score before Keaton Wright (Edwardsville) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Sanford responded by getting a run in the 3rd inning after Zach Jancarski (Maryland) singled and eventually stole third. Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) hit a sacrifice fly to left to give the Mainers their only run of the game.

That's not to say Sanford didn't threaten. The Moose loaded the bases in the 2nd inning with no one away, but a nice defensive play by North Adams starter Braxton Wilks (Abilene Christian) and back-to-back strikeouts got the SteepleCats out of the frame unscathed.

The Mainers threatened again in the 6th, putting two men in scoring position with just one man out though both men were stranded. Sanford entered the game hitting just .143 with the bases loaded and .176 with runners in scoring position.

SteepleCats' starter Wilks was excellent in the win, throwing six innings and allowing just one run on four hits, two walks and a hit batsman. Wilks struck out seven Mainers.

The Mainers return to Goodall Park, tomorrow, June 26 as they play host to the Keene Swamp Bats. The Northern Division Rivals will face off at 5 PM, with the pregame show beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network at 4:45 PM. In their only prior meeting this season, the Swamp Bats took the game by a score of 3-1.
