Schooners Win at Groton
Groton - The Schooners played a home game this afternoon at Washington Park in Groton, despite the change in home venue the Schooners bats continued to be hot as they beat the Bay Sox 7-4.
The Bay Sox got on the board first in the top of the 2nd when an Alex Mata double scored Ryan Wolfsberg and Andrew Penner to go up 2-0.
The Schooners would answer the Bay Sox and tack on three runs of their in the bottom of the 2nd. The inning started off with two singles from Nick Mascelli and Scotty Bradley. CJ Moore would bring in Mascelli when he blasted a single through the hole at shortstop and third base. Newly acquired Toby Handley would draw a walk to load up the bases with no outs. Ryan Ramiz hit a sac fly to deep center to bring in Bradley and tie up the ball game. The third run would be scored off a Richard Slenker fielder's choice as CJ Moore would score from third, making it a 3-2 Schooner lead.
The Schooners would add another run in their half of third behind heads up base running from Martin Figuroa. Figuroa lead off with a walk and then scored from first when Mascelli singled to the centerfield. As the centerfield was fielding it he bobbled it slightly allowing Figuroa to score.
After the bottom of the third New Bedford would pull their starting pitcher, Austin Cline, he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 3 batters. They would bring in Brandon Schlimm for relief. He would retire the Schooners in order and prevent any Schooners from getting on base in the 4th inning.
The Schooners bats wouldn't go quiet for long as they were able to get Schlimm for two more runs. Aaron Hill would score on Nick Mascelli's bloop single to center. Mascelli would score on CJ Moore's 2nd RBI single of the afternoon to put Mystic up 6-2.
Mystic starting pitcher, Kyle Dube, had a good outing going 6 innings strong allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 5. He was great through the middle innings only allowing 1 hit. The Schooners brought in Matt Ardente for relief in the 7th inning but was unable to make it out. He surrendered 2 runs to trim the lead to 6-4.
The Schooners would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th off a Brett Bond single through the hole at shortstop and third base. Ryan Thomas would get the save for the Schooners after pitching the 8th and 9th inning. The Bay Sox would get runners on and in scoring position in the 9th, but Thomas was able to get Ted Shaw to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
The Schooners currently enjoy a 4 game win streak, which has propelled them to sit alone in 2nd place atop the Southern Division. The Schooners look to make it 5 wins in a row as they play the New Bedford Bay Sox again tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM at Paul Walsh field.
