Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls fell to the Mystic Schooners Friday night at Cardines Field, losing the contest 10-4 and evening up the six-game season series at two wins apiece, with the road team now having won every game.

The Gulls would fall behind from the start of the contest, when a Schooners run came across on a first-inning fielder's choice. Mystic tacked on another in the second against Gulls starter Denny Brady, before plating three more against Brady on a walk and three hits in the third.

Newport got on the board in the second, when a bases-loaded walk worked by Chris Chatfield drove in Gabe Snyder, who was hit by a pitch by Mystic's Zach Ours to lead off the inning. Despite picking up four baserunners without the benefit of a hit, the Gulls only got away with the one run, leaving the bases loaded.

The Gulls added two more runs in the third to close to a 5-3 deficit when Jake Brodt hit a two-run bomb to deep-left field for his first home run of the summer.

However, Mystic erased any hopes of a Newport comeback, roaring to life with a 5-run 8th inning off of Gulls reliever Hunter Schryver. Despite a run in the bottom of the frame, the Gulls fell, 10-4 the final in front of 1,877 at Cardines.

Gulls catcher Troy Dixon continued his hot streak, going 2-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and a walk. The game was delayed 20 minutes in the bottom of the sixth when the light towers in left field went out and had to be restarted.

Newport is back on the road tonight to face the Winnipesauke Muskrats at 6:05 at Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, New Hampshire. Following an off day Sunday, the Gulls will be back home at Cardines to face the Muskrats again at 6:35 Monday night.
