North Adams SteepleCats News Release
The North Adams SteepleCats defeated the Vermont Mountaineers 7-2 Friday night at Joe Wolfe Field in a game where the SteepleCats were able to take the lead early and pull away late. With the win, the SteepleCats improved to 8-6 on the year and moved to a half a game out of first place in the Northern Division.
After throwing 49 pitches in two innings in his last start, Robbie Buffis was solid on the mound for the SteepleCats. He went five innings, allowed one unearned run off of five hits.
"Robbie did a good job setting the tone for us," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong. "He did a great job getting ahead of hitters, commanding low in the zone, and mixing all of his pitches for strikes."
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the SteepleCats began the bottom of the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out. Nick Riotto scored from third when Keaton Wright grounded into a double play.
John Mazza doubled on the first pitch to lead off the second inning for the SteepleCats. With one out, C.J. Price singled him in and then advanced all the way to third on a pair of throws by the Mountaineers. Price then came in to score on Easton Johnson's single making it 3-1 SteepleCats. The 'Cats would not look back.
Kevin Kurnan came on in relief of Mountaineer starter T.J. Santiago to begin the third inning and pitched well. He allowed one run off of five hits and pitched into the seventh, keeping the Mountaineers in the game.
After Kurnan left the game, the 'Cats were able to blow it open when Nick Riotto hit a two out two run triple in the bottom of the eighth. Dustin Shirley then singled him in to make it 7-2 SteepleCats. The SteepleCats also saw a fantastic job out of their bullpen to close the game out capped by Tanner Bird coming on with one out in the eighth to record a five out save.
"The ability that Tanner has to give you multiple innings at the end of a game is excellent," said Coach Armstrong. "I think the feeling on the team in general is that when Tanner comes in the game is pretty much over."
