Keene Swamp Bats News Release
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - The tying run was on second base with two outs in the bottom the ninth and Michael LaBeau (Castleton St U) got Alex Hanson (St Petersburg Col) swinging at strike three to give the SwampBats (9-5) the 6-4 victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks (6-7).
After losing four out of their last five, the SwampBats were in desperate need of win when they traveled to Maxfield Sports Complex in White River Junction, Vermont to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks.
Andrew O'Brien (Riverside CC) got his second start of the season and this one went much better than the first. O'Brien pitched to contact the whole night and kept the Nighthawks batters off balance. He tossed 6 innings, gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4.
A solid pitching performance from the starter meant that SwampBats offense had to come through and they did.
Dom Iero (Kent St.) led off the game with a double and Ryan Costello (Central Connecticut St U) drove him in to give the 'Bats the early lead. Parker Sniatynski (St. Louis U) and Jordan Howard (Lee U) hit a single and double in the 3rd inning to make it a 5-1 and Howard contributed again in the 5th inning to make it 6-1.
Then things got interesting as the Nighthawks showed they had some fight in them.
In the 6th inning Upper Valley got one back on a fielder's choice by Zack Canada (U of North Carolina Wilmington) and a throwing from Howard to make it 6-2.
Dylan Sbordone (Southern New Hampshire U) came in relief of O'Brien and gave 2 runs, 1 earned, in the 8th inning to make it a 6-4 game.
LaBaeau came in the 8th inning with runners on the corners and just 1 out. He got Charlie Concannon (St Josephs U) down on strikes and James Morisano (St Louis U) to groundout to retire the Nighthawks in the 8th. Things got dicey in the 9th but LaBeau closed the door to record his 5th save of the season.
The SwampBats travel tomorrow to Sanford, ME to take on the Mainers (7-7) for the second this season. The game can heard on the NECBL Broadcast Network and FM 104.1 AM 1220 ESPN Keene. Game time 5:00 p.m.
