Keene Swamp Bats News Release
SANFORD, ME - The Keene SwampBats had their chances, but left 10 men on base in a 2-0 loss to the Sanford Mainers in a one-game wildcard playoff on Sunday afternoon at Goodall Park in Sanford.
Trailing 1-0, Keene had runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but Lorenzo Hampton (FIU) lined out to first and Alex Griffith (Francis Marion) grounded out to end the game.
During Hampton's at-bat, he hit a ball that was foul by just a few inches down the left field line that would have given the SwampBats the lead.
RHP Edward Baram (Adelphi-6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K), RHP Jacob Dexter (Southern Maine-1.0 IP, BB), LHP Sean Fisher (Maryland-0.2 IP, 2 H) and RHP John Murphy (Maryland-1.1 IP, K) combined to toss the shutout for Sanford.
Baram earned the win for the Mainers and Murphy recorded the four-out save.
The Mainers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second as Brandon Lankford (UNC-Asheville) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a groundout, took third on a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Jake Alu (Boston College).
RHP Kyle Whitten (Virginia) was dealt the tough-luck loss for the SwampBats, allowing one run on five hits while walking one and fanning two in six innings of work.
In the top of the eighth, Sanford's Johnny Rizer (TCU) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a popup and scored on Conner Shepherd's (TCU) two-out RBI single to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Cordell Dunn Jr. (Grayson-2-4, 2 2B) and Jacob Koos (Stetson-2-4) both had multi-hit games for manager Lyndon Coleman's squad.
