Recap: Mystic 7, Newport 5 38 Aug 7th 2016, 02:32

During the regular season, the Gulls swept all three games at Fitch High School but the Schooners were able to rally late scoring two runs in the 7th and three runs in the 8th inning to win.

The Gulls struck first as they got on the board in the first inning off a solo home run by Stephen Scott. Scott hit a rocket that flew right out of the ballpark into the woods in right field.

Martin Figueroa would lead off the 2nd inning with his 11th home run of the year to tie the game up a one. Figueroa's solo shot just cleared the wall in center field, the deepest part of the ballpark.

But the Gulls answered right back in the top of the third with a run on a Stephen Scott RBI single into right field. With two outs Cole Fabio reached first base on an error by Aaron Hill, advanced to second when Mark Powell walked, then stole third base and scored on Scotts single to take the lead 2-1.

Newport would pick up a run in the fourth inning off a Travis Young sac fly to right field that scored Trey Harris from third base making it 3-1.

Casey Baker would come around to score in the 5th inning when he advanced to first on a four-pitch walk and then would make his way around the bases on three wild pitches during Nick Mascelli's at bat to make it 3-2.

The Gulls came up in the 7th inning and Connor Kaiser hit a two-run blast, off of Ryan Thomas, over the fence in left field to give Newport a 5-2.

With the momentum clearly on the Gulls side it and with the Schooners only having two hits it looked like Newport had built up a big enough lead to defeat the Schooners. But Mystic would begin to chip away at the Gulls lead in the bottom of the 7th when they got a big two-out two-RBI single from Ryan Ramiz that made it a one-run game 5-4.

After giving up the home run in the top of the 7th Ryan Thomas settled down and was able to shut down the Gulls in the top of the 8th.

In the bottom of the 8th, Brett Bond hit a towering double to center field that smacked off the top wall only inches away from a home run. Chase Lunceford and Aaron Hill scored on the play, to give the Schooners a one-run lead. Brett Bond would score two batters later on a Casey Baker bloop double to left field, making it 7-5.

Mason Kukowski would come to record the final three outs and he shut down the Gulls in order to complete the comeback and earn a save in the 9th inning.

The Schooners will travel to Newport to play the Gulls at Cardines field Sunday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35PM.
