August 7, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release
With a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the North Adams SteepleCats were three outs away from a trip to the Northern Division Finals. The inning ended up not going the SteepleCats way in a 4-3 loss to the Valley Blue Sox in the deciding game three at Mackenzie Stadium Saturday night. The loss ended the season for the SteepleCats.
"There are lots of individual moments that I will remember," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong about the season. "The number one thing I will never forget is what a family this team became. Through that we became one of the tightest teams I have ever been a part of. That is something I will never forget."
With one out in the ninth, Brodie Leftridge reached on an error and advanced to third on a single by Kipp Moore. CJ Stubbs then reached on a bunt single, scoring Leftridge and advancing Moore to third. Moore came in to score the winning run on a passed ball.
The SteepleCats got solid performance their starter Peter Lannoo. He lasted six innings and allowed two runs with both runs coming in the sixth inning after the Blue Sox figured him out. He faced the minimum in innings three through five.
"Pete did a great job," said Coach Armstrong. "He pounded the zone. He was ahead of guys all night. He was mixing speeds effectively. He gave us a great chance as he kept them down for the first five innings."
After the SteepleCats took the early lead, Lannoo ran into trouble in the second inning when the Blue Sox loaded the bases with nobody out. Pitching Coach Jonah Bayliss came out for a mound meeting. Lannoo then struck out more for the first out. The inning ended one pitch later when CJ Stubbs grounded into a double play and the SteepleCats got out of the inning unscathed.
"Every player in this league is capable of great things," said Coach Bayliss. "My job in those situations is to give them a little confidence boost and say 'hey, stick to the stuff that has gotten you here' and just letting guys know that they have been in situations before and have gotten out of them."
In recent years, the SteepleCats have established a successful winning tradition that includes many trips to the postseason. The 'Cats look to continue those traditions in the 2017 season.
"We are starting to set a bit of a precedent here," said Coach Bayliss. "We definitely want to keep it going."
